What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

The bearings in his axle were all Koyo's, they came in the install kit he provided when I did the gears. The O'Reilly by my house had a National brand in stock and Doug went with that over the cheaper MasterPro one. I can't tell you what caused the bearing issue. Doug is the first person to have this sort of issue with an axle I built. My only guess is either: A) There was some residual metal particles in the housing as a result of grinding down the 2 teeth on the ring gear for the cross pin to be installed or B) It was a faulty bearing.

I grind the ring gear teeth down with the gear removed from the carrier and rinse it off with brake cleaner before final install, so I'm pretty confident I didn't leave any contamination in there. Also, considering the rest of the bearings looked new still I don't think its an issue with metal particles getting to it, although its always a possibility that some material got into that bearing and fouled it.

The other carrier bearing was perfectly fine so I don't think it was an issue with too much pre-load on the bearing as that should have effected them both equally.

As for some kind of defect with the bearing itself, I have no way to prove or disprove that. Still, these bearings have less than 10,000 miles on them and that one was completed toasted while all the other bearing in the axle were perfectly fine.
 
All the rollers are wrecked about the same... I would bet on a defective bearing.

I would expect debris in the housing to affect all bearings equally since it'd mix pretty evenly with the oil after a few hundred feet of driving. How'd the oil and break-in oil look?
 
so I've been driving my wife's former Subi (she now has a shiny zoom-zoom) as I haven't had time to work on the little things the Jeep needs... in the last week, the smell of raw gas from the POS has had me turning a little green and wringing my hands in rage at the can't-kill-it-but-it-never-runs-right that is Subaru. On a whim tonight I googled "gas smell when cold out" -- 5 tightened clamps on fuel lines later and the damn thing is fixed. Googler is a wonderful tool.

That was a yearly maintenance task on my wife's 02 legacy. I carried the tools to do it in the glove box. Hers got so bad one time, I could see fuel dripping at the clamps.
 
Sparkly enough for my wife to craft with, all 3 times it's been changed in the last 6k miles (including today)

yeah, I bet that bearing was just junk. Unless someone decided to randomly heat it enough to anneal the rollers. I've gotten some dirt in diffs before when working on them under less than ideal circumstances and they never ended up looking like that.
 
Maybe an M90 in my future. Need to make the decision this morning. Have a line on a NOS compressor for a Jaguar 4 litre I-6 engine. Jag runs their XJs (well, XJR...) at 12 pounds of boost. Given that I am at the very limit of what the Sprintex can produce (8 pounds here, 9.6 pounds sea level) if more is desired, a larger compressor is required.

The price is more than reasonable.

What a dilemma.

12 ponds of boost though. Tuners out there are getting as much as 16 pounds, at sea level, out of these things. Would definitely have to install an intercooler...
 
Stayed late at the shop tonight and worked on my jeep, one down one to go, and i fully welded mine....

Actually pretty comparable to the price of frame stiffeners and nice rock sliders, and these are both in one package. When you see how these are built in person and how much work hooligan puts into these you will see they are worth the price imo
