What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

With proper gearing an AW4 will handle anything except my right foot.

I am about to kill my third... it takes a LOT of abuse to hurt em though. Definitely my favorite slushbox.

I will be replacing it with a manual because I know how to drive stick (didn't when I bought this jeep) and haven't killed an AX15 yet, with the same levels of abuse.

Connected the back-up camera so it comes on when I'm in reverse. Pretty high-tech, ay? Amazingly enough it actually was the brown wire with white stripe on pin seven in the black connector in the left hand kick panel. :)

AND, I got a new front driver MTR. It had a slow leak after Moab, and apparently it was in the sidewall, so Big O replaced it. I also found the leak in my air system, and it holds air over night. YAY!

Apparently, I'm the only one that works on their jeep. I had an obnoxious leak from the oil filter mount. Went to the dealer for new o-rings. They don't carry the kit for the Renix engines anymore. Had to pick three seperate O-rings for $20. Pulled off the mount, and look what I found:

I probably did this pulling the last oil filter off. It was stuck good and required removing the mount and holding it in the vice. Flores directed me to pull and pay, since F'N jeep was closed. Another 12 bucks. The plus side is I gained 10 psi in oil pressure. :)

I think it would have cost as much for me to mail one. It even has new O-rings. I bought them in a package of assorted sizes. It cost around $4...I think.:)

I switched to the later adapter after having a few "premium" filters allow drain-back. Coincedently, I had problems with the valve train a few months later.

Hope I didn't jinx you. ;)

I would have switched to the later adapter, but I had the o-rings and the filter already. Can't jinx me, I've had the beast for 21 years. :)

I wasn't so lucky.

Now, the carbon cannister and upper control arm are in the way. The system pressurizes faster, so the cussing is limited to oil change day.

Well I bought my 2001 cherokee limited about 4 weeks ago now and so far I have done the following.
1. fixed the "window lock" issue on all passenger windows
2. replaced front speakers with mtx speakers from my 95 xj country
surprised to see the rear speakers in the 95 fit the front doors on the 01
3. replaced oil pan gasket (what a fun way to kill an entire saturday working upside down!) not to mention it was easier on my 95 without those damn pre cats *grumbles under breath*
4. replaced oil filter adapter o rings
5. replaced spark plugs with NGK v-power plugs (the 4.0L loves these plugs ive had 3 xj's and ran ngk in all of them parts counter guy might look at you like your nuts but hey go with what works!)
6. transfer case bushing to get rid of that damn rattle!!
7. high pressure power steering line.
8. 2 cans of seafoam to remove any buildup or deposits within the intake or the injectors
9. fixed the fan shroud (huge surprise there lol)
10. clay bar treatment from mothers followed by a good coat of wax for the winter here in the midwest
11. undercoated the entire damn truck! I lost my last xj (95 country 4x4 5 speed w 352k) to rot and i figure if i can keep this jeep from rusting i'll have it a very long time.
12. resprayed the rear wiper arm since the paint was chipping and it was starting to rust
13. painted trailer hitch with truck bed liner to help prevent any further rust.
Pretty soon i'll be putting on a lift and hopefully some bigger tires!!
hopefully this post motivates some people to get out and do something great to there jeep!

yikes... no wonder you haven't had time to pick up your axle. Holy sludgefest, batman!

pshh ive been working 70 hours and stayed up Friday-sunday night to get this much done while I was home. I don't have enough time to scratch my own ass at this point. Hopefully be done next time im home. we will see.....

aint life grand sometimes? Good on ya taking care of sis' mess!

ignition switch done. driveshaft u joints done. temp lic plate lights done. recently did clutch slave, coolant over flow and get rid of renix coolant system. replaced one rear wheel cylinder, rear brakes, one front rotor and have 2 d30's and 2 8.25's to get ready to swap over. both will be 3.55 gears and f will be high pinion. i have spares to sort out and brackets to trim off and weld to the two axles i plan on using. and i ll need front coils and flex brake lines, shocks all around and new tires.
thinking of these tires http://www.onlinetires.com/products...31%2F10.50-15+maxxis+mt-762+bighorn++owl.html
and just going with what i have now due to money issues.

Started my tire carrier bumper project. Used some 2"x4" 3/16th tubing and scrap 1/8" plate I had laying around to make the tail light filler boxes. If I were to do another one, I'd run the weld on the inside of the pieces to reduce the amount of grinding.

Still need to cut holes for the shackle mounts, gusset everything, more grinding, then start building the 1/4" double shear box for the tire carrier spindle, then the carrier itself. This is the basic shape. Nice and clean. And HEAVY! Holy Cow this thing weighs a ton already.

Nice job on the bumper. Are you going to be able to get to the bottom 10mm bolt on the tail light lens with the bumper on?
Have you thought about integrating the plates that go inside the frame rails into the bumper. I did it on mine and it gives a lot of support if you drop off a ledge hard and help keep it from bending the rear sheetmetal on the XJ.

Thanks! Yes - I left that gap on the back of the filler boxes so I can fit a gearwrench up in there to get it out.

As far as integrating the frame rail plates, I couldn't find a really clear image on how to do that. I made the bumper plate into an L for added support but I plan on beating this thing and carrying a 37" on there eventually. I saw what happened to Frank's mount, how it cracked, and I don't want that to happen to mine.

Any pics would be appreciated.

the issue with xj's are the heavy bumpers are all bolted to sheet steel frame rails. where it fastens make the attachment areas spread out the load as much as you can. make your tire and anything else where it doesnt bounce at all. the bouncing and shaking is death to your frame rails and attachment areas.

you can make braces to bolt it to your receiver hitch, that will spread the attachment point stresses. and on the areas you cant see.....get the hole saw out and lighten it up. a 150 pound bumper mounted to sheetmetal rails is asking for trouble and getting it. plus the weight of a spare tire. good luck and the bumper looks good, i like it.
