What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

that worked well? I've been considering ghettofabbing something like that up but wasn't sure it'd work.

That was my third revision. The first and second used 3/4" all-thread at both ends. The all-thread would bow about the time the carrier started to loosen up.

The nuts, bolts, and washers were the only things I had to spend money on.

holy crap, I actually worked on the jeep  In addition to an oil change, tightening up a loose drag link end and replacing the steering stabilizer, I also finally (a year later) wired up the electric locker in the JK rear end. Tough to test whether it works or not, I'll have to have someone follow me next time I'm in the dirt...

woot -- good day for it for a guy worried about his radiator! Baseball was freaking COLD this morning.

I can cash and carry this set from the NAPA warehouse: Part number: BK 3353987

It's a Motive Gear master kit with mystery bearings. Anyone have experience with this set?

That cover gasket sure looks like an AMC 20.......
Yup, those copywriters done it again. At least NAPA lists the manufacturer's part number, which got me into the Motive Gear catalog. After searching more part numbers, I found I could order the master kit with Timken bearings, from Advance. I still get to seed my local economy, and deal face to face....with cash. :)

Took the Jeep camping over the weekend and ran a snow covered Eagle Rock. My cheap off brand Fisk Phantom A/T's performed marvelously, as did my Ron's Machining Service lunchbox locker. One thing I learned though, that despite all the extra room the XJ has over the YJ its still a bit cramped trying to carry all of the camping gear and the wife and kid. Autozone had a 10cu/ft soft sided roof top cargo carrier on sale for 20$ so I snatched it up and next time the tent, sleeping bags, pillows, blankets, and air mattresses are all going on the roof. That'll save me a fair amount of room in the hatch and might allow me to retain use of the rear view mirror.

Not many people up there at all actually. We started at the "water crossing" that is no longer in existence and once we hit the snow my tires were leaving all new tracks in otherwise pristine powder.

It did decide to snow/hail while we were setting up our tents, but then it cleared up and was actually pretty nice. Of course the fire and JD helped with that. The tents did all have a nice coating of frost on them in the morning though, luckily my Coleman Sleeping bag is really warm.

Oh really? As i got up there It was dumping snow and was a mudslide off baldy. Kept snowing off n on all night. I headed down around 1030 and passed probably 20-25 rigs headed up that way. :dunno: was a muddy mess the whole way.

How do yo like the steering kit?

All in all I'm happy with it. Once I get the narrowed D44 built I'll be going to crossover steering though, I just don't like having them joined. Until that time though I'm confident that I'll never have a steering failure though.

Yeah, we ran the trail today and only saw 1 other rig on the trail. As we were leaving there were a few groups heading up though.

We definitely noticed that the trail got hit pretty good, where we were though the snow just came in bursts (15min of snow, 15 min w/o) and then stopped all together.

If you headed down at 10:30 you totally drove past us drinking around the fire. We set up camp at the little pond just below Old Stage Road. Its right before the second "land bridge" and nicely secluded for the most part.

Oh no i headed up at 1pm yesterday and left 1030 this morning.
What time.Did you guys get to.trailhead ? I wonder if the groups i saw were behind you?

We got there about 0915 and headed up the trail by 0930. After we got past the rocky hill and other rough spots I did finally see some tire marks as we got closer to the big field where ER and Saran meet up. I think you forgot an air mattress or something if that was from you. We hit that clearing by 11-1130 and ate lunch. All in all we made a very quick run of it, only 1 rig had to winch up at the corner on the rock hill where we normally have to winch people.
