What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

holy jesus on a popsicle stick! that thing is tall..... you could clear 37's....35's no problem dude. seriously...bigger shoes or smaller lift....or both.
35's on 5ish inches

I think the way I took the Picture from the rear there, makes it look much bigger than it really it.... I took it at an up angle... its probably sitting at high as yours eflores since you got 35's on yours... looking at yours stuffin 35's in there reassures me that I'd clear 35's no problem... Ill stick with 33's for now until I can get a decent set of 35's. I personally think the 33's filled it out nicely... not too big or too small... but thats just me..35's would be nice also...we shall see... I haven't' even driven her yet, so first things first, I gotta bust the newly built cherry!

I've seen a few guys run 37's under that much lift. Just a thought. :gag:

lol... you guys aren't telling what i want to hear... alright..so bigger tires it is... or since i just got these for a $150 and my stocks... I guess Ill go work some magic with my old leafs and these ones and whoop up a bastard pack and bring my self down to around 5"... i think thats what ill do, since i got everything to do it already, plus i have 2" adj shackles and shackle relocation bracket i wanna use... guess its back to the drawing board... i hate you all...lol j/k thanx guys, much appreciated!!!

Just dont wanna see you super tippy and flop. Rather keep it a lil bit lower and find a line. Plus driveline angles and steering geometry are easier to deal with.

Right on...good looking out gents...About the steering and handling, I've installed Drop Pitman Arm, Homemade HD Adjustable Track Bar, Upper & Lower Control Arm Drop Brackets to help compensate for the lift I have and restore if not improve handling, and my track bar/drag link angles are parallel, but I do get the whole COG aspect of everything. I'm gonna bring it down to around 6" and leave it there...so when I find some 35's i can just throw them in and not even worry about it. Appreciate the thoughts and opinions and ideas you guys give. I built my rig to where it is in 5 months thanks to these forums. Thats including a rear floor pan restoration and the whole interior Herculined. So thanks gents, keep up the good work, and keep hittin the trails!!!

What rear axle do you have? Since it's a country addition it came stock with a Dana 35, unless someone swapped it. If it still has the turdy five, you'll want to swap it with with either a 29 spline 8.25, or an XJ Dana 44. An 8.8 is also a great swap, but you will need to do a bit of fab work to get it to fit. I'd gear it and lock it before jumping to 35's, heck stock gears are going to suck with 33's. Oh and you'll need to swap in beefy axles if you want to jump to 37's. Here's a flex shot with 37's. BTW, I have very little up travel as well, but have a lot of droop. This setup works well in the rocks.

Yeah it has the 8.25 27 spline... Ive read tons of threads about tires and axle sizes and upgrading to 29 splines and all that jazz... Thats why I've been so hesitant about going to a bigger tire... I'm sure the 8.25 would handle 35's just fine... others would tell me different...I've been lookin into an 8.8 for a few weeks nows, and i'm definitely jumping on it. But for now... I'm gonna stick with the 33's and just drop it down some. Thanks for the tips and your rig is sick bro!!!

If I can't get this 8.8 from this guy... ill probably just upgrade the axle to 29 spline USA Alloy shafts and a new carrier, re gear, and lock... that'll be just fine for anything I ever plan on tackling for a long while I'm sure. This won't happen for a lil while anyways... 8.25 27 spline is more than enough for me now. I'm not some hardcore super bad a$$ rock crawler that eats boulders and craps pebbles... I'm just a "newb" learning the ropes man... that is all. I definitely already got ahead of myself, and now I know I gotta slow down and rethink my approach to this and do a lil more research before I make my moves. Hey but I have as much fun learning this stuff as I do building it. Not counting all the times I wished death upon my XJ for not cooperating with me and for trying to destroy my hands and the top of my dome...lol

Keep your money and build something else. Keep your foot out of the throttle and the 27 spline will be fine. No need to waste the cashe changing it to a 29 spline and alloys and blah blah blah. By that time you coulda built a 9". Seriously. Run the 27 spline. Get used to it and being open, then when you do lock it up it is easier to go places cuz you know how to find a line based off where your tires will be and not just putting the hammer down. There are a lot of haters and naysayers as well as knowledgable people here on the web and in shops in CO. Just be careful who you choose to listen to.

Feel like spending the money? - Buy sliders / tow point, and upgraded steering. That will serve you far better than a 29 spline swap

Sounds good...I've been wanting to fab up some rock sliders for a while now.. just haven't got the steel yet. I just got done looking at reinforcing the steering box ...definitely gonna hit that up as well. Anyone know of some good places they would recommend to buys steel from for reasonable prices?
