So I'm out on a country road near home when I see a really sharp red XJ with a cowl inducted hood, and it was for sale. so I look at it and realize she's been packed with a 355 motor. I could already smell that burnt mud/exaust smell in my nose. Then I realized that it was a damn 2wd!! so heres the question(s) Would making it a REAL Jeep be more expensive than just dropping some beef in one of my three 4wd XJ's? And do you think the dana 30/35 would hold up? You know, I just dont think any of it is worth the hassle the 4.0 is damn near plenty of push and if i need more, avenger makes great superchargers i hear. Am I right?

You don't know the state of tune of that 355. If it is out of any vehicle from the 70's or 80's, I kid you not, that XJ is slower than a stock 4.0. Some of those V8's in that era barely pushed 160 hp and were a joke.

Why would you go through the time and effort to put in a *bigger* motor, and then limit yourself to a lighter right foot so the axle won't break?

The D35 can't handle a locker and 160hp. I would have spent the time and money on an axle before more hp.

Well, test drive it. If you like the way the V8 runs and drives, buy it.

It would be much easier and cheaper to swap axles under his, than swap a smallblock into yours.

And yes, I said axleS. You can run the 35 til it breaks, if you want, but wheeling it will eventually break it...

I saw I guy that had Yamaha 175 that needed a top end and this is what he did instead of buying a cylinder and piston kit. He removed the gas tank and cut the top frame. Then he welded a bracket to hold a 5HP Briggs tiller moter on top of the bike. He bolted a sproket onto his fly wheel to drive the transmission with a chain from the Briggs. He then tooled around the neiborhood on his Briggs powered Yamaha with it's 5 speed transmission. He was dirt poor and got all this stuff as junk. I think it was flat out brilliant even thou he could have fixed it for 150 bucks. He fixed it for free and wound up with what I considered a backyard enginnering marvel. Hats off to the shadetree's !!! The Moron would be sitting around and wishing he had scooter. Maybe this Jeeper came from the gene pool.

You should always check over any vehicle very closely that has had an engine swap as you never know if the person who did the swap knew very well what they were doing. The quality of the work makes a big difference in longevity and reliability.

93-95 ZJs came stock with a 318 V8 on 30/35.

My thoughts exactly. If I were to go through the hassle of swapping in any type of small block, the rest of the rig would have to be able to handle the horses because my foot would get heavy whenever possible just to make it feel worthwhile. Otherwise that's a whole lot of work for a cool sound.

I think he's a moron for doing it to a 2wd Jeep. Have you ever gone off road with radials and 2wd? its a joke. If I were to do a V8 upgrade on any 2wd it would have to be a chevy S10.
