Welding u joint caps

Is it nesessary to weld the u joint caps to chromo axles. I do not have full circle clips and was thinking it would be a good idea to weld the caps.

What Chromo axles came without full circle clips?

Which Brand u-joints are you running?

Running a search on here will net the size of the clip, and Home Depot should have them IIRC...

Sorry, but never weld caps in place unless it an emergency. You will need to service them at some point down the road. I would call the place you bought them from, and ask them which ones to use.

You dont think its ok to weld in ujoint caps?
Its a pretty common practice

welding caps (just a few small tacks) is great for stock shafts which don't have room for full-circle clips. DO NOT weld to chromo shafts, you will void any sort of warranty they have and they are already machined to fit full circle clips.

Ok Ill just get some full circle clips. I was just thinking of a quick solution since the u joints have been in for about a year now. Thanks for the tips guys. Oh, they are Warn shafts with the hub kit and 760 joints.

Just FYI since you are running Warn shafts. When I got mine I could not for the life of me find any full-circle clips that were to the exact specs that Warn listed. I looked everywhere. The closest ones I found ended up being the ones at Home Depot. Don't quote me on this without verifying it first but I believe I got 1 3/4" size (going from memory... and mines poor). They've worked fine so far.

If you happen to find the ones Warn specifies or if you go with something different, please post up and let us know.

I ended up welding caps into my full-width 44. I used lots of sticky synthetic grease, and with the lockouts the joints are only moving when wheeling. Hopefully it works out for me.

Wouldn't this cause problems on the trail if you busted a u-joint & bent the cap? I would think it'd be a hassle to put a new one in with the weld still there.

When a u-joint breaks with the stock axle it usually takes the ears off, or at least bends them to where they can't be re-used anyway.

That's why you should carry complete shaft assemblies.
Changing a D30 shaft on the trail takes about 15 minutes, start to finish.
Changing a ujoint on the trail sucks badly.

Yep, carry assembled axles, so when you do break one, people aren't waiting for an hour+ while you figure out how to change a joint out in the dirt. & as mentioned before, once you spit out a cap, the axle ears are weakened even if it doesn't look like it so scrap em unless you want to spit another cap soon.
