Weld in cage kits

Who makes a good kit for the money? I don't have an extreme amount of money to lay out for one, but am looking at increasing the safety & strengthening the body of my XJ. I've seen the kits from D&C and Barnett. The D&C kit looks like something I could afford. Has anyone used this kit? Did it fit reasonably well? What options (if any) did you go with?

I'm in the same boat as you right now. I have been wanting to piece together a few of the kits out there to get what i wanted. I like the D&C cage, but i dont like the extra spreader design at the rear hatch. (Andy's dad had this cage in his, should have got a look at it this weekend). Maybe he can get some good pics of it and post them up. It looks like it fits pretty tight in his Jeep. I like the dash spreader and the top of the A pillar spreaders on the D&C cage. The only things i would change/ add is a X on the B pillar on the harness bar, and the rear hatch spreader with some triangulation on the roof and between the C and D pillars later on. There is a guy on mid ga offroad who has a bender near me and offered to help bend up the later pieces. The biggest thing i dont like about it is where the B pillar ties in directly above the unibody rail from what i have seen and read. I would probably just use a larger floor tie in plate.

I just don't have a bender, so as long as I can get a great start with a kit I can modify anything else that I don't care for.

EDIT: as long as what I need to modify is straight lol

Same, I was going to have the X on the b pillar bent for me.
All my triangulation was going to be straight pieces I could do easily

I'll probably be doing this after Windrock, maybe even before Harlan if it works out. See what happens and do it better than me lol.

I have a bender but not the ability to use it. Talk to Andy. IIRC he bought a kit and then added to it. You remember WTF? He did some thing like that too but I don't remember which kit. If you plan on keeping it mostly stock then this is the way to go in my opinion. Ideally if I had to do it over again I'd do a hybrid cage with a roof halo and the a-pillar outside protecting the a-pillar. I was glad both my flops were just that. Something occurred to me this weekend when I was on my side on Twisted Intentions..... My internal cage is way too close to my head if I get in a violent roll..... Something to think about.

Andy has the T&J performance kit. It isn't on their site anymore and I couldn't get them on the phone when I called a few weeks ago.

If I had a bender I would do the same. Halo with a pair of A pillar posts through the fender.

Funny, I plan on doing the same thing. Get a pre-bent cage kit and add a halo, a-pillar posts, and tube fenders. Tie it all together and into some 2x6 rockers. It'll probably be next year for me though.

Yup, T&J Performance. Was $670 shipped to my door with the NAXJA discount.

I added both harness bars and a big X behind the drivers seat.

You can kinda see it here.

Yeah Andy I remembered you mentioning it was a prefab kit that you'd started with then added on to, I just didn't catch who you said made it.

What kind of bender do you have, Glenn?

If you can get in touch with T&J I'd go with them. It fit VERY well. Within 1/4 in of the inside of the body all the way around.

Pro tools. I have trouble judging the distance between bends. Haven't had but two tries at it but both were wrong. I need to buy some tube and go to town one weekend and get it figured out.

I have heard good things about that kit. How do you think it will clear your head when on its side? The reason I ask is when I was on my drivers side I noticed my noggin was close to mine. Might be the fact that I'm in a seat belt and not a harness but it has got me to rethinking mine. In a violent roll over, not a flop, I am now concerned about hitting my head.

Have you seen the "Bendin' Tube 101" article on Pirate? Looks pretty informative.

I'd love to have a bender but I don't know how to use one either. I'm just at that crossroads of "you should try and make your own" and "you dumbass you should've just bought a prefabbed kit!" I think for my sanity's sake I'm just gonna go with that D&C kit.

Yep read that. Messed with it some with some pieces I have but either I am understanding the where it bends on my bender wrong or my math was wrong. Like I said what I NEED to do is buy some steel and play. $$$ makes that hard to do right now. I agree on the idea of a kit though.

And I'll definitely be putting some padding on the tubes close to our noggins and anywhere I think Sara may make contact with any body parts.

Yes. No doubt. Mine needs to be secured better!

Well next time I'm out that way we can mess with it some. Maybe between the two of us we can figure out the directions in that article.

Works for me. Unless I get this x paid and step off the deep end!

Buy some cheap sch 40 and play with that.

I believe the last time I checked sch 40 is close to the same as HREW. Sch aint that cheap!

The tube that runs along the top of the door is above the door frame and against the roof. If I'm strapped into my seat (Like I usually am on obstacles with a chance of roll-over) I don't think it's possible for me to get my head within 4 inches of a tube.

I do want to put some padding and Oh sh*t handles in strategic places. Those things are on my LONG list of things to do over the next 2 months.

Yea my tube hugs the body so close you can barely get an oh shit handle on it. Still I was moving too much in my seat for comfort.
