ok, when I sart from a stop it's the worst, or if I shift too fast and don't let the clutch out smooth, i get this klunk sound coming from underneath. I can't find any cracks in the unibody, which is what i feared it was. Is there any common probs that cause this? XJ gurus help.

it's stock, so I don't think it needs a SYE. It feels like it's coming from the drivetrain, or maybe a cross member. a little more hard hitting than the exhaust hitting something, but I'l check.

Either of the two above would be good starts. If you just coast to a stop, does it still do it when you start up again? If so, I would think slip yoke probably needs to be lubed.

A torn transmission mount will let the t-case wobble around under aceleration, letting it hit the exhaust. Makes for a pain-in-the-butt sound to track down until you put a piece of wood between the tranny and crossmember and lift...

Another common 'thump' from stock Jeeps is from a dry slipyoke. Grease it a bit and see whether the noise goes away.

Ask me how I know! :D
