Water leaking into the vehicle---help

Hi All,
This is my first post...I have recently bought a 1998 Cherokee Sport and there is an issue with water leaking into the front passenger footwell when it rains. It seems to becoming in somewhere closer to the door side than from the center of the vehicle. As a side note the windshield was replaced just before I bought it and I was wondering if it could be a bad windshield seal?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, dripping auround the seal to where it leeks at. Probably more of a leak than you might think. If there is enough to be an actual drip from the underside of the dash than it is likely to be running down the inside of your fire wall getting under the carpet where you don't see how much it is really leaking.

That is most likely the prob, since the windshield was just replaced. Easy fix.

You might also check your heater core. Which, is not likely to be the prob, unless, it has been raining everytime you drive the vehicle and as luck would have it, your heater core went out. More difficult fix.

Another cause can be that the drain on the AC is clogged. If you run the defroster when it rains, it will pull tons of water out of the air, When they leak, they drop it into the passenger side floor.

I did not know that. Where exactly is that drain. My core I think has gone out but I have not really checked it. I just bypassed it. Texas, heater is only needed a few months out of the year. The defroster was used alot during the cooler months here and I had a leak on the passenger floor. I assumed it was the core but it never did lose water in the cooling system or overheat.

I need to check this drain you speek of. :)

The drain is a small rubber tube with a 90 degree bend in it. In the engine compartment, Look just above the pass. side frame rail on the firewall. You will see it. You can take a welding rod or use compressed air to clean it out.

Thanks for the replies...with the amount of water that was in the passenger side I will have to guess its the windshield leaking...there were literally puddles of water and it was after a night of steady rain. I will check out the AC drain as well just in case.

There's also another commong problem for the passenger side water leak. It's either the around the foam seal of the cowl intake, or the foam seal around the blower box where it mates up against the firewall.

There's a good discussion in THIS THREAD about it, and my fix on how I stopped that leak...

The most likely culprit is the windshield. The windshield rubber on my '95 XJ had actually shrunk with age and in the top corners had made a large gap between the rubber and body. I cleaned it out as best I could and filled the gaps with black silicone, smoothing it out with a wet finger.

yup, i had the same leak around the blower box on my '98. nothing a little silicone couldn't handle :D

Ugh been a long week commuting 170mi a day...anywho is pi$$ed down rain last night for about 8hrs so I had a look in the passenger footwell this morning....sure enough there was a puddle about 1/4" deep (over the carpet -- used a shop vac to dry it out). I pulled off the panel that covers the fuse box grabbed a hose and started looking for this leak. It sems that it is leaking in from the top right corner of the windshield. I filled the gap with RTV and will watch to see if that has solved it...if not I'll dig into the "Ivan" fix ;)

Thanks for the help and advice so far :)

Glad to know you found the leak... I had the same occur on my '97... Took it back to the shop and they repaired it, and paid to have the carpet cleaned... I pulled the carpet up anyway, it was soaked and the sound insualtion was ruined...

Will.
