I have a stock xj 88 4x4 4.0 aw-4 would like to install about a 3" lift with the biggest tire i can mount on a stock rim 31's maybe any help or info would be great thanks!!

Your best bet would be to click the search button above, then click "advanced search", then search for "31's" in titles ONLY. You will find a lot more information than could be easily typed here.

stock rims
if you are running stock rims which are 7 inch you can run a 10.50 wide tire of any height 31s would be your best bet but you could get 33x10.50 with fender trimming although they will still rub a bit

hi. i am new to upgrading an xj, i bought my '99 just before heading to the sand box, so its all been dreaming and researching. i just found this guys site http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/ here on 
today. hes got a lot of good stuff there. like the changing your bumpstop hight and moving shock mounts and even a 3-4 inch rear leaf mount drop.
i am still trying to figure out what all else i have to change after I do a 3-4 inch lift
