I posted this up in the Modified Tech section but should have done it here since Sierra is where I Wheel Mostly.

Thoughts, concerns, experience with a 44 with a mini spool up front? $$ is tight so I am considering this as an option. Thanks

If money is tight I would say no way, only because you will not have CTM's and aloy axles.

A spool in a 44 with stock axles and u-joints can break from just turning the wheel when stopped. I watched someone swap out a broken axle in a welded 44 front diff, turned the wheel lock to lock and broke the u-joint.

Just turning the tires when stoped, one tire wants to spin forward just a little and the other wants to go back just a little, but this puts a very strong twisting force on the axle shaft.

I have used a few of the Ausie Lockers in the stock Dana 30's and I like them, not too bad at around $250 and a simple install. They will not stay locked, only locked under power, like the full Detroit lockers.

Edit: Also if you go with a Ausie you don't have to pay someone to have your gears done.

you have a 44 up front?
since when?
anyway, i had a welded front once in a scout d44. i hated it. if youre gonna trailer your rig i say go for it. otherwise do a locker or a posi. plus ive read mixed reviews bout mini spools breaking after very little use( at least in 8.8s) most guys that run them in a 8.8 say just weld it up, its stronger.

Thanks for the input. I will save up for the Aussie(out of stock) or the Spartan.. Whats another $200 for my budget 44 build.
Jon, i picked it up along with a rodeo 44 a while back. i have been slowly collecting parts to start the biuld.

spool/welded rears are doable in the rear around town...if you have a good deal on tires lol....no its not that bad, just usually get parents running for there kids in parking lots from the tires chirping "i swear officer i was not gassing it around that corner" ...up front? no way!!!

Thanks Sean, the spool up front idea is dead. I'm just going to get the locker for the front and keep the stock shafts with new 760s and full circle clips.
