I have the opportunity to buy a 95 4 door sport, automatic 4.0 with 222,000 miles for $1500.It looks real good inside and out,but needs brake work in the rear.
My question: is it worth it with such high miles? Will I be able to sell it and make a little bit?K.b.b lists a private party value of $3100.00 but there are a lot of variables involved in that.
Thanks for your time.

My two cents - if it checked out all right wouldn't be too reluctant to buy a high mileage vehicle for myself, but I'd skip it for resale. That's a lot of miles, and the price is not all that great unless it's super clean. There are too many old XJ's with high miles out there for you to make much on an ordinary one.

2wd or 4wd? Elaborate on the brake work.

I would buy it for $1500, run till it hits around 300K and then sell it for maybe $700-$900 range.

As for resale, do you mean immediately turning around and selling for a profit or driving it for a few months/years then reselling? Either way I don't see it selling for more than about $1500

I ended up buying it for 1300.00 looked too clean to pass up.Let me tell you that the h.o motor is a torque monster!!!It has a little more power than my 89 I have....The motor sounds better too, maybe I'll swap it into my 89.....
Nah I'll just resell it.
It seems to have a thump, thump, thump coming from the rear only when you hit the brakes and then you let off it stops thumping?I hope it's not the rear axle.I originally thought it was the abs but the guy who sold it to me said it didn't have abs( I have'nt had time to check).Do the 95's have abs? What would cause the noise?
Another issue I need to address is the fact that he said he put a 160* t-stat in it,I asked him if it ran too cold and he said no but I'm pretty sure it needs a 190* stat.I think he put the colder stat in it to mask a over heating problem because he said it started to get hot once, which at that time he installed a new radiator.
Once again thanks for your time.....

He initally told me that but after a test drive I'm starting to wander.
Anyway,I was thinking about detailing it and fixing the nickle and dime probs to increase resale. Will the drive train last till 300k?

that 160 tstat is too low. Definately swap in a 190.

Have you pulled the drums off and done a visual inspection? Perhaps a warped drum? I'd start by replacing the shoes and bleeding the system.
