yup^^ '88 had horizontal mounts, '91 was vertical bolts:tears:
unfortunately, I don't still have my old one-- it woulda been a gift if I hadn't already gifted it to another stranded motorist.

The AC delete brackets take a day or two for most stores to get, and the one i got was the vertical bolts. I have the renix style compressor I pulled off of the stroker if he needs it.

Is he sure its the compressor locked up? The RENIX era XJ/MJ's have a crappy idler pulley built into the compressor bracket that is known to lock up and it is not rebuildable and the part is no longer available.

Well that's cute...so how to you get around that one when it locks up? Go for a shorter belt and bypass it?

You can swap out the compressor/bracket from a later model and use a belt from a later model. That gives you the better/easily replaceable pulley.

I haven't talked to him since earlier so I don't know what he found out about the clutch/pulley.

So my buddy had it towed to a shop where they replaced the compressor. Being on the road and in a time crunch he just went ahead and bit the bullet. On the plus side, this is teh first time in 8 years he's had functioning A/C.
