Unusual Tranny Question

This is for anyone who has played mix & match with manual trannies.

I have an '88 MJ 4-cyl 2WD 4-speed that's not running because the clutch slave cylinder blew. The '88 used the internal slave, so I have to drop the tranny to replace it. If I have to drop the tranny anyway, I'd like to make it into a 5-speed, but I can't afford to buy a 5-speed tranny.

However -- I also have an '87 MJ that was a 4.0L 2WD 5-speed,. The engine is gone but the tranny is still there. I know the 4.0L bellhousing won't bolt up to the 4-cyl engine. Does anyone know if the Peugeot 5-speed would bolt up to the 4-cyl bell housing?

I know your looking for a straight answer from practical experience with these combos, I don't got it.
But I would call Advanced Adapters, they have always been very knowlegable and real helpfull with all of my questions mixing-and-matching things like these.

Eagle look around for a 84-86 xj some had the ax-5 with a 4cyl and some had the v-6 you might be able to use the 4 cyl bellhousing with the ax-5 tranny off your 87...I would also give collins bros a ring for the bell housing and swapability Q's those guys seem to know their stuff on older jeeps :laugh3: ....

ps you may have to mess with your driveshaft length when your done as the tranny might be shorter or longer...

The '87 doesn't have an AX-5, it has a BA 10/5.

All the info Ive seen nothing mates up to the ba-10 except the 4L and even then I think the were only available with the 231 tc....Check around for some 4cyl yjs though some are thought to have the 4popper and ba-10 combo years (87-89)

Sorry didnt finish my thought you could find a deal on a ax5 and swap that and the bellhousing at the same time(but then if you could do that youd just put a new 4 speed in huh???) Its late I cant think anymore :twak:
