Traveling to San Antonio

Heading to San Antonio for some training for a little while. Probly going down the I-35 corridor. I was wondering if any of you guys knew the best stops for gas and food and the like. Taking two cars so need to do it on the cheap if I can!
Hey and maybe I'll get lucky and I'll roll through when someone is doing a get together while I'm around!

yeah but I'm hoping to swing by the work day in bridgeport maybe, if I can. So that takes me way too far east to take 281. I hate back roads too. You can never get help when you need it.

if you 281 it, there's Hard Eight barbeque in Stephenville, They serve FREE beer with your food. I've been through there on a motorcycle, BROKE, and they gave me beer anyway!!! I believe it's right before the 281/6 split. I could probably meet you there for lunch, or dinner, hell, I'd go for a snack and a beer, the pork chops are about an inch thick, the food rocks, the bananna pudding makes me wanna run around in circles. There are plenty cool people to help if you get in a pinch, promise.

Rudy's BBQ in Austin.

don't they have rudy's in san antonio? I know they have them as far down as new braunfels.....i've crawled out of the river to that location many a time

My last name is Houston for a reason (direct decendant of Sam). I was born in West Texas, worked for TI in Dallas/Plano, and I still own some property in Kerrville. Like every good Texan, I wanted to go to heaven when I died, but wasn't sure I was going to make it, so I did the next best thing and moved to Colorado. :D

I think Rudy's started in the one location outside of S.A. (north) then branched out. Sorry for hijackin your thread, we're into our barbeque. I say take 281, remember it's not a ride, I'm goin on an adventure.

I have taken 281 and 35. I will NOT take 35 again if I can keep from it!!!

I know this is thread is a few days old, but I just want to agree with this statement for the record. Taking 35 sucks. Especially on the weekend. It's always bumper to bumper. The only time I took 35 was from San Antonio to get to Wichita Falls. I never got above 45mph. It took 10 hours to get home. Disgusting. :gonnablow

yeah I've been hearing great stuff about them. Will probly hit up the one in New Braunfels.

Hopin to get wet in the Guadalupe river this weekend

oh and sorry if I don't check in often. No internet on Camp Bullis.
have to go to the schlotzsky's on 1604 and 281!

Just in case some one gets so lost they end up in the RGV we have a Rudy's too. Good Food but I prefer LoneStar BBQ here over Rudy's.
