transfercase question

yesterday I took the 91 XJ out for a little drive and when I came home I decided to engage the 4wd to check the light and make sure it was functioning. Well I was able to pull the handle all the way back and there was no slack in the pull and did not engage. The light did not come on either. Is this a broken cable maybe?? Im not sure wear to start looking. Since Ive had the Jeep its always worked great.

yeah, no cables in a 91 XJ (or any XJ for that matter), but the linkage can pop loose fairly easily. My bet is that you'll see the little pin that slipped out of a plastic bushing when you're under there...

What 'Grin said.

Any one of 3 pivot points for the links have come out of the green bushing like this one on the bracket of the transmission:

Or...... this bolt is loose on this link adjuster:

Yeah its odd..I assume it just came un hooked in the linkage cause I can move it back and forth with no issue. Normally you can feel it engage. Ill look tommorow before work.

I'm happy to give it a look when you come do the VIN check too, Ryan, assuming you don't need 4WD before then...
