When engaging my vehicle into 4H the transfer case seems to be making a rattling noise. I ran the vehicle in 4L and it the sound isnt apparent their or in 2H.

I know my next step is to check the fluid level and check it for metal particles.

But Id like to know if this preminition of things to come or a frequent failure mode. Also if some one could provide a trouble shooting flow chart which could guide me in the direction to go after the fluid check/change it would be greatly appreciated. I only have time to work on the vehicle on the weekends so it would be nice to know where to look next.

Thanks

There's no failure tree in a 00 cherokee factory service manual, only a simple condition-cause-correction table.
In it there's no specific symptom in the table for rattling only in 4H.

For "Transfer case noisy while in, or
jumps out of, 4L mode."

1) Transfer case not completely
engaged in 4L position.

2) Transfer case shift linkage out of
adjustment.

3) Transfer case shift linkage loose
or binding.

4) Range fork damaged, inserts
worn, or fork is binding on the shift
rail.

5) Low range gear worn or
damaged.

or, you might be hearing a worn out chain producing that rattle sound.
