Hi, today i changed the rear axle oil and the transfer case fluid. When i dropped out the transfer case fluid it was red in color like atf. The fluid that i got from the stealership was normal engine oil color. It says on the label mopar transfer case oil. Anyway seeing as though they didnt return my call today and because i dumped the old oil into a dirty container. And the fact i needed my car, I filled it with the new oil. I gave the stealership my car reg when i bought the oils so i assumed the previous owner filled it with atf and everything is ok. Tonight i do some searching on here and now im not sure? Its a 97 and the model shown on the badge is 242. The back of the label on the oil says, 'This lubricant is intended for use in the nv245, nv247 nv249 transfer case and not recommended for use in other vehicle transfer case applications'. Ive never heard of those tc's? Have i done a wrongun? Thanks

The FSM says that our transfer cases use ATF. Don't know why as I am pretty sure there are no clutches in there. But the Escort ZX2 I had called for ATF in the manual 5 speed transmission. I think they do it for better gas mileage. Best to use what it calls for I guess, but I doubt that it is a big problem.

thanks winterbeater, i was concerned when i read a recent post regarding the oil pump for the transfer case not being very big and thats why they use atf as opposed to axel oil. But i guess im fine with what they gave me.

Whoa, I made a bad ASS/U/ME tion. I fully admit my ignorance on the transfer case. Looking in the FSM I see that there is pump. I stupidly thought they were like manual transmissions inside. Of course maybe they have pumps now too.

If it has a pump (and it does), I would get that oil swapped out ASAP. ATF is probably a lot thinner that the oil you used and has higher cleaning capabilities. Sorry for the bad advice.

It depends on the t-case. Was there was viscosity rating on the fluid. Typically t-cases use atf.. and yes some manual trans. use ATF as well. I know the BW T-5 does for sure.

Sadly there is no rating on the fluid i just put in. Everything is working against me this weekend. My computer went down meaning im having to use my phone! Ive done some searching and it appears the fluid they gave me is for the jeep commander which has the quadratrac II and a vicious coupler if that means anything to anyone. It appears thicker than atf fluid though. Ive been busting my balls at work for the last 3 weeks continuous without a day off. Now i finally get a day off and this happens. The dealership is closed today, and the weather is great. We were meant to be driving to the beach today for a day out with the dogs (as soon as my wife wakes up!) I have only one spare quart of transmission fluid. And i live in the middle of nowheresville! What should i do? Anyone know anything about the commanders tc, will i be ok to use it or am i just out of luck?

Probably too late now for input, but I wouldn't disappoint the dogs (LOL). Mine love the water and look expectantly at me whenever I go anywhere. This would be worse in the winter with low temperature.

I got this sorted out. I went to a local store that i didnt think would sell atf. But they had castrol atf (dex III), so i dumped the old stuff out and filled her up. Ill be going to the dealership tomorrow to find out what happened, but im pretty sure they sold me the wrong fluid. Hopefully i can get some free stuff from them because of the headache they gave me!!!

Anyway, everyone lived happily ever after. This is Mrs Dunbad and my dogs at the beach!!!
