Is the AW-4 pan big enough for an Auto-Meter trans-temp sender. I want to install a gauge but need to know if it will fit.

It's a '97 XJ

It should be, but there's two reasons why putting the sensor in the pan isn't that good of an idea...

1) It's too close to the ground, and if something catches it, you're boned.
2) Temperature sensors require constant flow over the tips for accurate readings, and the flow in the pan isn't that good.

What I would do is put some sort of "T" in one of the cooler lines (preferably the pressure line) with a short enough branch to put the tip of the sensor right in the middle of the "run" - so that there's always fluid running over it. The BEST way to do this mod would be to put a remote "spin-on" filter kit in (since the AW4 filter is only a strainer anyhow) with a port for temperature testing in place, and probably toss in an external cooler while I was at it.

Just wondering, but do you have reason to believe your transmission is overheating? The AW4 is a solid box and typically runs quite well (as long as you don't feed it synthetic) - unless you are towing or suspect your torque converter clutch is AFU, there shouldn't be much of a heat problem.

I dont have reason to suspect anything is wrong with it right now. I just wanted a way to keep an eye on it.

Are there any "T's" that will allow the sender to screw/plug right in??

Most fluid senders use pipe thread for mounting (either 1/4"NPT or 3/8"NPT) so pillage around your hardware store with your sender in hand - test fit to see where the tip will end up. I've usually had good luck that way, but you may sometimes have to "relieve" the opposite side of the pipe.

i just installed this guage. you need to cut your tranny line in half and mount the sender inline on the line. it was fairly easy to install. jason over at jeepin.com has a write up about how to do it. if you dont want to use the housing that came with the guage you can flush mount it in your dash in the black plastic piece between the stereo and guages that sometimes has a clock on the top of it. if you want pictures i can email you some.
