trans for 86 cherokee

I have an 86 Cherokee with selec trac np228. Iv done some research and my trans should me a 904 correct? If so how many spline?

86 XJ should have had a904. according to a few sites, 23 spline

Yes 23 spline TC904 or TF904 which is really a 909 because you have a lockup torque converter. Also you have the chevy "small corporate" bolt pattern bell housing. it is cast as one piece and cant be changed. Unless you have the 4banger that is.
