anybody here regularly using a US military m101 trailer? not the Canadian 101 which is the same as the US m416 which are 1/4 ton capacity... but the US 3/4 ton trailers.

I was Wondering if its too much for an XJ. its only 1400# empty, and the max for XJ is 5K #s.
But, I was towing an enclosed trailer last week that weighed about 1400# to pickup GS cookies (200+cases) so I figure the weight should not be an issue.

I can get a pintle hook rig for the XJ, and since I have a JCR rear bumper with receiver hitch and a lft, the pintle should be pretty close to the right height.

Mainly wondering if anyone else has had any luck with one.

That 3/4 ton trailer is HUGE and all steel, we used them to carry artillery ammo from the dump to the field. I looked a couple and have pulled one or two behind a 1/4 ton, felt like I had a house back there.

Isn't that the M105 2.5 ton one? (which is absolutley humungous)

The M101 3/4 ton usualy had wood floors.

Don't think so, the big one we could not get low enough to even get near the pintle on the 1/4 ton unless we had 4 people to hold it up while retracting and folding that support wheel. I don't remember seeing any with wood floors, not in 98/99 when I retired.

I have an M101. I replaced the axle and expensive to replace 9.00-16 tires with a 14 bolt (it was free) and 235/75R15 tires. I can move it around the yard by hand. It is rated for 3/4 ton capacity off road, twice that on road. I also took a couple of leaves out the springs, it rode really rough stock. Empty I hardly notice it's there. If I load it heavy, it pulls ok but doesn't stop worth beans. The only brakes are a parking brake, which I never bothered to rig up with the new axle. Other than the non adjustable landing gear and no brakes, it works pretty good. I use it to haul remodeling supplies and my camping stuff for over night Jeep trips. I would like to make a surge brake setup for it. I've only got about $300.00 in it, so overall I'm happy.

thanks for the info!

I am looking at one for general use, hauling stuff when needed vs borrowing/renting a trailer each time. And with the number of them hitting govt liquidation I hope to get a decent price.

I would like to use it for the option of going camping as well (if we ever get the time :o), but not necessarily need one that goes deep off road like the 416 can, more just one that can go in the dirt if needed.

It sits a little lower than stock because of the smaller tires. The originals are almost 35" tall. You can drag one almost anywhere.

that's awesome Sarge! How much lift you got on your XJ?

I have 2" lift, and receiver in in the bumper, so I'm thinking I should be able to mount the hitch at close to right height when I get one.

Well I got a trailer coming to me!!

Well, I got lucky and actually WON an M101A1 auction with Govliquidation.com this week! And boy did I get lucky.... there were 39 trailers up on auction, ranging in all kinds of condition. The one I got was actually one of the best 5 (from what I could tell from pics online) and I looked at them all.

it is complete except for the canvas cover. it has all the side racks, and all the top bows, pictures look great (I'll have to copy them over to a host and repost them) and it's located in PA... only about 8 hours from me. Final cost on auction.... $220! half of what I was willing to spend. In fact a few of the trailers went out for around $100.

I submitted the EUC paperwork friday, and it can take up to 45 days for approval, so by the time it's approved the weather will be nice for my drive down to pick it up.

Once I get it, plan to strip it down, rewire it for 12V, add some more lights and reflectors, paint it black and bedline it.

That's a pretty good deal!
My Jeep has a 4.5" lift and 33's for comparison. I got a combination pintle hook/trailer ball to pull mine with so I can use the same insert for a friends flat bed trailer too. If you really wanted to, you could even make one into a dump trailer pretty easy. Post up some pics when it's done.
