Toyota axle

Scored a free one today - minus its third member (anybody got a 4.10 geared one laying around?)

Anybody done the swap? I'm wondering about the driveshaft length and adapting it on my '88. Of couse there is the 6-lug wheel issue too, but I think I can adapt the 6 x 5.5 to 5 x 4.5, probably.

Any advice is welcome. I've searched, but it seems like few do this swap.

You must have the standard 8.8" Toyota. It's a good axle and pretty stout. You should be easily able to find 3rd members at the junkyard.

The slick trick for that rearend is to get a V6 3rd member and axle shafts, they'll bolt right in and be 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern. Plus you get the heavier duty 3rd member and Dana 60 sized axle shafts. I believe that Toy rear discs are bolt on too, but you've gotta find a nice late model for those.

Have fun.

Is that the 2wd axle with the 5 x 4.5? I've found some conflicting info on the axle.

Yes, the V6 2wd rear axle. Check out AllProOffroad.com for info & parts for Toys.

Thanks Vintagespeed.

Any suggestions on adapting the driveshaft? Honestly, I haven't looked at the part numbers to see if it might just bolt up, but I thought somebody might have this info right at hand.

You can either do a conversion U-joint, or have a Toyota end put on your existing shaft.

Did you get an E-locking unit? Is it an 8.4" unit out of a Tacoma (non-elocking) or an 8.0" (could be e-locked if it came out of a Tacoma or 4-runner)?

I've done some Toyota axle work, and love those diffs. They are way stouter than anything that has ever come in an XJ (including a Dana 44).

It's a post-86 8" axle. Unfortunately, not a locker (well, not yet!)

OK, good, it is impossible to retrofit an E-locker to an 8.4 inch diff.

The 8.0 is easy to retrofit. Here's a link to my buddies website. I did his axle for him a year and a half ago.

E-locker install.

Since you are missing the third member, just go to www.car-part.com and search for a 4.10 geared E-locked unit. Then follow the instructions in the link above.

any 4x4 toyota 3rd member you find i a junk yard will have the 4.10's you want in it.

allso if the axle was from a 85 or older toy the front 3rd member will work too.

Why the cut and weld?

Is this necessary on a 96 or newer axle? In other words If I found a 96 8" without the e-locker would I have to cut the housing to put one it in?

You would need to add teh extra stud locations and the longer studs. The seal surface is likely already there on the 96 and newer.

We did not have to cut or pound out my buddies 1994 housing, only add some seal surface.

This is all good news. I'll be hunting around the net for a third member, and bolt the bad boy up!

;)

3rd member

I have a couple of 3 rd members if You can't find one cheap in your area. I wouldn't spend the extra money on the v-6 3rd because you don't gain that much strength and the 4cyl ones are cheaper.

I wouldn't suggest buying anything but an E-locking third member.

I have a Toy 8" and I got a 1310 flange to bolt onto the Toy third. got it from High Angle Driveline.

and I really don't know if you can fit a 86-95 Toy 8" (58.5 WMS-WMS) under an XJ with the springs in the stock location. I have mine under an MJ which has narrower leaf springs, and the leafs are pretty close to the brake drums. you would for sure have great difficulty getting the e-brake hooked up.

as for driveshaft length, it pushed my slipyoke in about 3/4 to 1 inch.

be very careful about those 2wd v6 shafts, I have heard tons of rumors about these, but have yet to hear a verified account. just make sure it isn't a Toy 7.5" diff, they look the same as the 8"

Well, I got it off of a Toyota guy, who had grabbed the axle for some spares. All he ended up needing was the third member and brake drums for his 8", so I'm pretty sure it's the 8. The axle tubes are 3", and I think they are 2 5/8 in the 7.5, right?

I'm learning bits and pieces from them by checking toyota sites. I feel for the poor IFS folks. ha.

Well, I was actually hunting for a Ford 8.8, when this fell in my lap.

Of course, that would make me a traitor too, wouldn't it! ;)

toy axles suck...

damn traitors!

Are you going to make me go through the litany of reasons Dana axles suck? Again?

You might be the biggest Dana pimp on the planet.
