Well, for starters...... in IL, you want to be careful about that. You can actually be ticketed for pulling someone out if you don't have a tow operator's license.

Like Brian says, use d-rings, or loop the strap back through itself around an attachment point.

A tow truck driver was the man that first informed me of the law in Ohio. They convinced the legislature that it was unsafe for people that weren't licensed to recover a vehicle.

I've seen a few licensed "professionals" royally screw up a vehicle when it could have been avoided. One flatbed driver told me to leave my XJ in park as he drug it up on to the bed with the winch. I gave him a look and put it in neutral. Idiot.

I didn't say that a tow truck driver was any more qualified, just licensed
I had a heck of a time convincining a tow truck driver that it was OK to tow the Mj with the rear wheels on the ground, he insisted that all 4wd vehicles must be on a flatbed, and wanted to charge me the flatbed price as well. All that for a tow that was 3 miles from my house.

I agree.

I always specified for a flatbed when I needed towed (twice). Mainly because I had AAA and there wasn't a different charge, but the first time a boom truck showed up and said if I had lockers he wouldn't hook it up.

He put it up on 4 wheel dolly thing.

Transfer case in neutral sometimes locks up all 4 wheels. I think this depends, not uniform amongst all Jeeps.

Also remember the transmission does not get lubricated when the engine is not running due to the pump.

It depends on the drivetrain.
N in my case will lock the front and shafts together, and i've got a 5 spd, so no worries about the auto being pissed off.
I put the trans in nuetral and left the case in 2wd.
it was only going about 3 miles, it was cold and raining and I didn't feel like waiting and paying for a flatbed.

I had a hauler tow mine 200 tarus home when it froze up on me. He set down in front of my house and then he proceded to get about 10' up the hill. He then decided to gun the hell out of it and slide backwards into my car. $9500.00 in damages later I got a new car out of the deal.

when we bought my XJ we had a car dolly... two wheels on the trailer, two wheels on the ground. i think it was like 100 miles home... tranny in neutral (5spd) and t-case in 2wd, and all was good....
