Top rack for XJ

I run a Yakima rack...custom made for a jeep cherokee...it's a nice look... Yakima and Thule make similar racks...but i think Yakima's are pretty decent

There are only two roof racks designed for XJs that i think are worth the price. 1 NAXJAS own farmer matts roof rack is great and a fair price and much nicer than the surco and other modular ones. Its designed for holding real weight, and designed to fit the roof of a XJ. It looks great, its low, wide, its just great. http://www.farmboydesigns.com/racks/index.htm

A close second is Kevins: http://www.kevinsoffroad.com/roof_rack.html

ARB used to make one but it was over $1,000 if i remember correctly.

If i did not get a farmer matt or Kevins roof rack i would build my own. And i would borrow veeeery liberaly from their designs because they are both so nice.

Get something that mounts to the drip rails not the stock roof rails.

Kargo Master from 4 wheel drive. Expensive, but tough and holds my 35 with plenty of room for the jack, shovel and cooler. I went with the short one to clear the snorkel. 4 wheel parts wholesale sells a decent one for around $200, but it was too long for me.

the best pic from the E-bay rack is this one.... its not welded, but the "floor" of the rack is bolted together.... and it looks to be attached to the stock plastic mounts.

looks ok but can you put a spare up there?
r-
Easily. There's almost enough room for two spares (I run 235/75/15 BFG ATs) I wouldn't trust walking around on it (I'm about 210), but it's held a verified 150 lbs. without a problem. The only thing making me leery about putting more weight on it that it only mounts to the stock crossbars. I almost (and still might) put a Land Rover-type floor in it held in place by P-clips. That ought to help it support a bit more weight.

That said, I wish I'd looked around a bit more. For what I spent, I should have gone with Summit Racing. Their prices on racks are pretty good, or at least were this past summer.

Anyone know exactly how the Farmboy Designs rack attaches to the roof? It looks like it has its own mounting brackets that run the length of the roof and bolt or screw to the roof. I like the rails that stick out of the sides to keep the body off of trees and such. Thats why Ive been thinking about The Olympic top hat rack http://www.4x4products.com/roofracks.html

I wrote Matt (Farmboy Designs) a couple of months ago about his roof rack and he wasn't making them anymore at that time. His rack actually replaced the original factory rails and used stronger mounting hardware. It's one of the best designs I've seen out there and was well priced.
I'll probably end up designing a similar rack and getting with a friend of mine to fab it up. Kevin's rack was my other choice, but was a little out of my price range.

I have had the Thuke M.O.A.B. for about six months now. I love it. Very sturdy. I needed a basket rack that would still allow me to mount two bikes up on top. This was the best rack/basket combo for the job. Other brands do allow you to mount bikes, but I wanted the ability to lock everything down.

Here is a link...

a vote for yakima loadwarrior.

Mine is on aftermarket crossbars, and the stock ones for extra support....its solid. I dont load it up much, but it holds quite a bit. I have the yakima bike fork mounts which work nicely with the rack, or can mount to the crossbars along the side of the rack. I also mount a short fiberglass cb antenna on it. I like the available accessories for it. The intergrated fairing is nice too. Only complaint is its alittle small.
I wanted a mega warrior, but the load warrior fits nicely with the sunroof open....it just taps the rack when open all the way back.

Those crazy Germans!!

HA! I want one of these racks!

That ain´t no rack. That are just some carriers (sold by german companies like Hella, Därr and other) on which a Maggiolina roof tent is mounted.

Looking for a rack? Hannibal makes some one-piece-aluminum-racks with a lot of options (carriers for everything, a camping table to put under the rack and much more):

This is my surco rack. its aobut $250 with guttermounts. Mine is about 4 years old but it works great. The only thing I would change about it is I wish I had bought the bigger one. thsi is it after i mounted it to thule cross bars for strength and i added my kyak rack on the sides.
