TJ flares and Paint finally done!

My bumpers are custom fab'd by www.kodiakoffroad.com there in Anchorage. There made from 3/16" and 1/8" I'm not sure where they got the "D" rings from or specifics on the welding, But I can tell you they are plenty strong.

You can get "D" rings at Six Robblees www.sixrobblees.com do a search for part numbers B-40 (Has safe working load limit of 6,130 lbs.) and B-50 (Has safe working load limit of 15,586 lbs.) They are designed for tractor trailer load securing. But this all depends on how well you weld them on. They have all sorts of interesting heavy duty stuff.

Another question I get alot is: "What are the horns on the bumper for?"

Answer: So I can rap the winch cable around it, that way I don't have to rewind it between uses. Comes in handy.

Very nice...

Did you consider painting the chrome? The mirrors, grill, headlight frames...

Either flat black, or even carrying on the cammo... Might be a better overall look...

But really, it looks great as-is...

I thought about painting the crome stuff, but I have found that it doesn't seem to last long before it starts to chip away. I figured it would look better this way than with half the paint chipped off a month down the road. If any of you guys have any tips/ideas to paint chome, lets hear em.

The paint looks good. I've always liked brown camo.

What's with the red front skid though?

Gotta have the mud flaps here. (I hate them also) It is a hefty $230 fine without them. They are each held on with two bolts, very easy to take off before wheeling. There just a semi flap cut in half, cheap too. You are suppose to have them for the front as well but I haven't found a way to attach them easily and so far the po po haven't bothered me about them. We will be moving to Arkansas in August and I talked to a buddy of mine down there and I should be able to pull them off. :)

Oh and "Jump this",

ALASKA Is slightly north of Sacramento, about 3000 miles north just come on up and check it out. We still have a little snow laying around. High today 50 degrees. I'll see ya in about a week or two. Driving the Alcan is quite an experience. When I drove up here 4 years ago about a third of it was gravel. Some places the pavement was worse, lots of frost heaves. Be prepared. ;) haha

I spent a month in Alaska at Ft. Wainwright when I was in the army in 1983. I tried like crazy to get stationed up there and never did. I spent my last 5 years in a desert unit, the 5th SFG(A). I'll never forget my first night up there when I wanted to "look good" and went to the bowling alley with some friends wearing my maroon beret. I wasn't sure if the pain in my ears was ever going to go away! Maybe that's why the airborne company up there wasn't wearing there berets!!!

Anyway, you should come to TN, they don't even require fenders here! I've got a friend that has a tube frame that he licensed without fenders or bumpers and it's absolutely street legal, but you should drive behind him sometime on the road; those 44" Boggers have a bit of a wobble to them!

nice rid dude, what do you do at Elmendorf? I've was tdy there this past january. i'm a kc-10 crew cheif so tdy's there are frequent. anyway, nice paint job, well done.

I'm in Quality Assuarance here, I'm a C-130 Crew Chief. The camo job is not stenciled, I found the pattern in a military guide for painting camo online, it is a hummvee pattern. I drew it all out with a permanent marker first and marked each area with 1,2,or 3. There was no taping off between colors, I only taped off windows. Worked from lightest to darkest.

Hoo-ah, found that site myself...and this is the first time I've opened the thread. I printed one of these: http://ruputer.hp.infoseek.co.jp/jeepp/jeepjs/jeep000js.PDF and used colored pencils to do the camo. Good to see what it actually looks like on an XJ. Even nicer to see someone who took the time to do the camo correctly. :) I see too many people who taped the lines off :nono: instead of letting them flow together. Light to dark is the way to do it. :) I'm doing the 3-color camo because I miss my M1025 a LOT. I'm doing the OD on the undercarriage, axles, and all hardware as well. :) Everything but the disc brakes pretty much.

Looks great!

What brand paint did you use? I'm picking up a few cases of Aervoe in a couple of weeks. Your chrome should rough up with some emery cloth or sandpaper...I bet it would stick then. ;)

so is that spray paint that you used or is it a special type a auto paint. Cause now yall have got me interested. Im looking for a new paint jod anyways Thanks

I used Krylon Ultra-Flat Comouflage spray paint, it says its for vehicles among other things. Picked it up at the Base Exchange for $3 can, used 25 cans, 10 tan, 10 medium brown and 5 dark brown. You can get at just about any hardware store, but its a dollar more a can.

If you decide to do it, take time to read that website I posted above. It is very informative and helped me out alot. I ended up with a very smooth pattern. Take your time on the prep, mine came out looking better than many of the military trucks on base.

Thanks for the complements, and good luck. :)

You dont have a link to the page where you bought the TJ flares do you. I cannot find them on the site in the standard width.
How wide are they exactly if you dont mind me asking. I measured an un-mounted one and it came out to 5" even though I have read they are only 4". I talking about the TJ rears only as they are wider than the TJ fronts and want to fit them all round. Would you be able to measure the full width not just the flat top?

Cheers

It's funny to see that pattern book that is on the link. I worked in the Marine Corps paint booth for 2 years painting all the different types of government vehicles. I had the patterns for the HUMMV and 5 tons memorized. During that time I painted over 400 peices of equipment. I was the only painter for the Marine Corps at the time as we were a test site in Hawaii. I never even thought about how all the GOV. vehicles actually had patterns assigned. Do you think they will start painting the Marine vehicles in the new Digital pattern? We painted a wall in our office that way and it looks really cool. Just had to share and say that that camo job looks good.

This is a very good thread, nice jeep as well. My 88 XJ has the clear coat peeling and paint and the oxygen buildup, etc. and I have been thinking about some desert camo. Good web site above as well. The question I have is about protection. You wouldn't clear coat the paint because thne it would shine, but how would you protect the paint? Thanks
