Tire Question

Hi, I'm thinking of putting tubes in. I want to air down for beach running but i dont want to spin the tires. I mean that when Im on the sand Ive been told to lower pressure to 12 to 15 lbs. Seems kinda low. They tell me its because of the type of sand on the beach. Dont want to get stuck. I can air up after but the only air requires driving about a mile or so on the road. Guess I could get a compressor or use an air tank. Thought it would be good idea to install tubes. Anybody do this. Thanks for any advise. Robt.

Just break down and by a small compressor or air tank. IF you need air elsewhere and are not just a mile down the road you have it.

What tires are you running and at what size? Most the time 15lbs is vary comfortable for most tires. Air down does help alot in sand. Try 15 lbs and if you feel good about it go lower. 10 should be your limit in general. Some people feel comfortable with 2 lbs in the tires

I drive at cape cod all the time and you do need to air down to 12-15 pounds and then drive about a mile to air up as along as you take it eazy you should be ok when you hit the beach go down to 15 and run then if you need to go lower

the prob with tubes is that the tire at low pressure will sometimes spin on the rim this causes the tube to rotate and tear the valve stem.

I live on the Cape (Yarmouth). It is not only a common practice, but required when you run the National Seashore, Nauset Beach in Chatham/Orleans (http://www.town.orleans.ma.us/pdf/departments/parks/orvregsweb05.pdf) or the others. You will be OK airing down to 12-15. You'll need the extra footprint on that sand. Bring the items that are required, and, if I may add, learn who has right-of-way before you go on the beach; usually the same on all of them that I,m aware of. When you come off the beach, just keep in mind you are still aired down and don't go zipping around until you air back up. And, Chatham Police have a 4x4 out on their beach in the summer and do check, so I'm told.

But, get the air comp anyway, you'll use it. Have fun!
