Time to Lift it

There it is boys, $3,000 worth of cardboard. Isn't it pretty. I can see it now, bloody knuckles, broken bolts, I can't wait............. party1:

Is it still on for tomorrow? I need to get a backup vehicle but I espect to be on the way south by mid-morning.

Jim and DJ check yer PM's.

I'll be in Golden for the early part of the morning taking care of some charity work, then heading in for court to see what / when things are gonna happen or if it's gonna get continued.

Sorry for the speed bump in the operation guys.... but we'll get some wrenchin' in for sure.

Maybe DJ will post that mad-flexin' garage poser shot he's got! :D He's got something approaching 8" of lift on 30" tires...it's able to clear any speedbump or parking block in the Northern Hemisphere!

sweet. tons of fender clearance im betting......

Yup, got it all done, I just got home. It took us all weekend, 12 hours on Friday, 12 hours on Saturday, and about 5 hours today. Didn't have too many major problems, but there were a few. When installing the ACOS, I cut to high on one side. So Troy had to weld a few fender washers to the coil support so we would have something to tap into. When I put the shims on the springs, we got it backwards. In the process of flipping them around the new Rubicon center pins stripped nice and clean. So another home depot run for some Grade 8 bolts. There was to much zinc coating on the Rubicon U-Bolts, so we had to clean those up. The drag link did not clear the discos, so we had to heat it up and bend it down a little. We were both tards while putting the t-case back together. We could get it to sit flush, but as soon as we torqued it down, the shaft would be frozen. It took us the better part of 45 minutes to realize the oil pickup was on the wrong side of the case. Then the drop brackets were just a pain all around. After we finally got them on, we could not get the lowers mounted. Rubicon, in their infinite wisdom has failed to redesign the brackets. They changed to a wider super ride bushing. But they did not widen the drop brackets to compensate for this. So Troy had to fab up a little spreader to really bend the brackets out. I'm not entirely happy about the way it looks, but we had no choice. Other than all that crap it went alright. It went about average for a XJ lift, not friendly at all. The only thing we did not get mounted were the rock rails. Those will get put on later sometime.

As Jim said, I'm at or above 8". Troy's rig has around 8" and is on 35s. From the ground to the drip rail, I am about 1/2" taller on 30s. So it is a little bigger than I expected. I am still going to run 33s though; as I do not want to trim the fenders to clearance for 35s. It looks pretty goofy on 30" tires. Definitely need to get some bigger meats asap.

Big thanks to Troy for donating his garage/self/tools for the whole weekend. Thanks to my buddy Mike for helping out and being my taxi all weekend. Thanks to Jim for making it down Saturday night, even though his own rig needs some more attention. And last but not least, thanks to Gavin for sending me the big ass 1/2" Drill Bit for the DBs. Troy took some pictures before we lost light. So hopefully we can get those up a little later.

Okay what's this about 1/2 drill bit for the DB's? I'm hoping to be putting my on this winter. So I'm keeping my eyes and ears open for tips and tricks for putting them on.

Glad to hear that things went well. Sorry I wasn't able to help. :laugh3:

I've got one as well...forgot about that little detail with the DBs and will have to make sure that's mentioned on my page. That's total BS about REs new LCAs having thicker bushings though. Troy made up a nice little spreader that apparently did the job though.

DJ, did you forgot to mention something about ummm...part numbers? :D

Edited to add: Looks like I've already mentioned the 1/2" hole. http://www.yuccaman.com/jeep/re_db.html

Shuddup fawker! You pinheads were getting things done too easily, you needed the extra project......... :laugh3: I still can't believe I left you guys alone at my place while I went looking for drunks.

Yeah, putting the oil pump inside the t-case tends to bind things up a bit :dunno: but at least it wasn't me who spent 4 hours trying to remove the rear bumper. Those nuts on the back of the unibody for the bumper brackets are a bitch from what I hear........ :laugh2:

I tell ya what, Rubicon Express was a whole lot less than impressive with their products this time around. I can't believe they'd re-design the LCA with a wider bushing and not change the DB's to accept them. I had to spread the brackets over an inch to get the extra 1/2 inch needed to squeeze in the LCA's...... Rather than smack the brackets with a BFR, I fabbed up some 1/2" threaded rod with two nuts and washers. Put the threaded rod thru the mounting bolt holes with the nuts on the inner surfaces of the brackets and turn the nuts out to spread the bracket. Worked good, but had to weld one nut to the threaded rod because I couldn't find another matching nut. Then there were the friggin' U-bolts...... heavily coated in zinc, the nuts bound up bad in the threads. I had to break out the tap & die set and clean the threads on the u-bolts and nuts. Friggin waste of time that was..... And the weak-ass center pin bolts for the rear spring shim kit..... Jeezus! Stripped out under the load of the leafs being tightened down.... JUNK! Nuthin' like making 'em yourself outta grade 8's.

Yep those High quality RE center pins are the same type I snapped the heads off of on Carnage at Coloradofest.
