Thermostat

I still do not understand why people think that putting in a 180 degree thermostat will help with cooling issues, or possibly give better performance. In cold weather the only thing a 180 degree (or lower) t-stat will do is make the engine take longer to reach operating temp. Regardless of ambient temp, once it hits 180, it opens and will stay open throughout your adventures. If you have problems cooling after that, you have other issues. Add an aux tranny cooler, take the radiator tranny cooler out of the loop and you'll sleep better.

5-90, thanks for the clue about the 180 for Renix. It sure won't hurt here during the summer.

IIRC I got into the spring in the lower hose thing a few years back - was it necessary, and discovered that they were helpful. The real cause is an old radiator with poor flow clogged to a point the water pump starts cavitating. The hose makers throw in the spring to stop customer misperceptions about their hose quality. Removing it is a way to diagnose how bad the radiator is - sucked shut means get a new radiator, preferably with an extra core, according to the radiator makers.

An obvious upgrade for many of us.
