I see it now...About a 1/4" up from the seam on the back side. An amazing job. I nominate you for Renix-of-the-Millenium!
 
Stupid question. When you guys clean up an engine, what do you use to shine the plastic/rubber. Is it some type of wax?

Silicone spray will make it shiny and help prolong it's life but will pick up every bit of offroad dirt imaginable next time you take it out. I used to shine my engine bay but haven't done so in a long, long time.
 
The RENIX engines clean up nice! Here is the one that is in my 90 that was in the running for ROTM in May.

Any special reason you didn't upgrade that when you had it all apart?

Upgrade what? Closed cooling to open?

I personally haven't had that much trouble out of it, not as much as a lot of other guys, anyway.

Same reason I still run vacuum disco. :D

The vacuum disco isn't that bad as long as you are aware of it's flaws, have gotten rid of those stupid vacuum blocks, know exactly how it operates (to facilitate trail repairs), and aren't running tires larger than say 33" (the intermediate shafts aren't all that strong).

Blocks? Do you mean the connection on the axle? That is a problem point, I had to secure mine with a bigass ziptie.

I also replumbed the whole system through an air switch under the dash:

...and use it with my lockright for a poor man's ARB.

It's held up to my 35s and the moderate wheeling I do.

The big rubber guys that the lines go into. After a good ten yeras they swell a bit and no longer seal well. All you have to do is cut them off and slip some 3/16" (IIRC) line over the hard plastic line and then the metal nipples on the diaphragm.

As for the actuator in the transfer case I never had problems with it if it wasn't siezed up, they do that sometimes. If it works it works, if it doesn't it doesn't. ;) I no longer have a vehicle so equipped though.

IF you don't already have one get yourself a spare intermediate shaft or two (assuming you already have spare outers) it will help. You don't really need to put the C clip back in, I've known many who just let them float.


PS - There si a cleaner way to do this. Early XJs (84 - 86) had a vacuum switch in the coin tray area just for the front axle, the transfer case was always engaged (don't recall what case it had, that was a few glasses of wine ago). That switch will drop right into an earlier early body XJ console (the coin tray in screwed in, in the ChryCo years it was molded in) and look completely OEM.

I saw that in an older xj at the junk yard. I had to look closer. I didn't see a t-case shifter. So it was pretty much like an electric tcase shifter...

I Don't know what t-case that was either.
