What's the easiest way you've found to light one? I think I saw your picture of an easy-light charcoal bag, damper open, light it, close the door, come back in a half hour dump coal in, and shake every few hours?

I lit some kindling the other day in prep for a longer burn but there was practically zero updraft so the smoke wanted to fill the room. Makes sense because that room was maybe only 10 degrees above outdoor temp. I closed the stove, said to hell with it because I had more important stuff to deal with and figured I'd try again another day. I'm thinking I need to build as large of a fire as I can and let it get going before opening the door.

the compressed sawdust firebricks work well for wood. Burns pretty hot and clean. Dunno for coal though you're probably on the right track with the charcoal.

but yea damper and vents full open, let it get started with a good updraft before closing the damper down

Wood & coal are entirely different setups, both for starting and maintenance...mine would be a terrible wood stove.
