THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Colin, tore the 258 down tonight while waiting for Sam to show up, it's definitely usable - thanks! Crank looks a little sickly, hoping 10 thou off the rod/main journals will clear it up. Where do you guys usually take your machine shop work?

Just use Porch Machine. I hear they keep all their tools outside in a yard though.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

If they had the shit to turn crankshafts I totally would. But I asked and they said crankshafts turn fine if they're left in the engine, why did you take it out? I'm not really sure they're qualified for the job.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Ill talk to my uncle. Youll probably want to drop off whatever block you're using at the same time unless you don't plan on boring it out or getting it honed.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I don't plan on doing shit to the block :gee:

Last time I tore down a 4.0 (the horribly abused one out of my XJ with the blown head gasket) all the factory crosshatching was still plainly visible even after a year of rotting with bores full of water and 8lbs of thermite. Pretty sure it'll be fine without, but then again I don't really know shit about building engines and I'm not sure the rings will seat properly without a hone.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Just thinking it would be ashame to spend the time/money on the crank only to not have much compression due to worn out rings.

But nothing wrong with low budgeting it. Doing a cam/lifters/timing chain isn't a bad idea and shouldn't be that expensive. Boring the block would require new pistons so that kind of sucks.

Not sure what a set of .010 over rods/mains would set you back.

Also, I'm pretty sure that crank has been cut already? Not sure. I'm sure they make .020/.020 bearings for the 4.0 though.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

For you guys who have driven older xjs. How are the brake MC and vacuum booster on the 96? Would the MC and booster from my 98 be an upgrade?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'm not sure, I'll have to toss my calipers on it later and find out what the journals are sized at, ballpark. They do rods to 40 under and mains to 20 or 30 depending on company, so I'm probably set either way unless it's had a few lives. It's a 64mm snout crank, so I need to either get the $35 Hesco 10mm snout spacer or have 10mm taken off the snout anyways.

I have a Cloyes timing set around here somewhere that I got from Jeff in like 2009 and never used :laugh2:

Cam adds $150 so I'm not sure, but probably a good idea. Lifters are pretty cheap iirc. All of this is stuff I wasn't fully planning on spending money on (though I'd been reading about strokers and dreaming ever since I threw new rod bearings in my trash DD and realized the insides of engines really aren't that scary) so I'll probably just budget it by tossing a couple things I need onto every rockauto order I do, then build it when I have everything on hand.

I have no idea what pistons I will need to run at this point, if the stock ones from the block I end up using work, I'll just put them back in with the same rings probably. If I need to run new pistons, I may have the block honed at least.

edit: Stefan, 95 and later are a dual diaphragm stock, so you won't see any difference really. 95/96 use a different design from 97+ due to ABS system and pedal box+firewall redesigns from 96-97 but they are about the same strength braking wise.

Well if you're on a budget, then no need to go crazy. I wouldn't change much other than the crank and whatever you need to get it in place.

You don't necessarily HAVE to rehone/bore the block. It cost me about $800 to have the block hot tanked and bored. You also ideally want someone with a deck plate to bore the block out so that when you torque the head down it doesn't warp the cylinder walls out of shape.

Ideally you'd want a balanced rotating assembly, but again, not a huge deal with all factory parts. None of the parts in my 440 are balanced as an assembly (rods are balanced to each other, pistons to each other), but it definitely makes a difference.

I'd research any other cheap mods you can do while you're in there (i.e. on my 440 we opened up the main oil pickup galley and the lifter galleys to get more volume).

I'd love to find a clean 2 door to keep stock suspension etc, and do a low budget stroker with my m90 on it. I feel like it'd be supreme

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Any of you SE Mass guys have a preferred place to bring scrap metal? Have a bunch of copper and some aluminum to get rid of. I was planning to take it to Allied Recycling in Walpole, unless one of you bros knows of a better spot.

That's where I go!!! They gave me a free sweat shirt

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

FML!!! Hydraulic pump just blew up on the crane again! Worse part is I have 70' of stick out with a giant truss hanging on it. Lost all pressure and the pump started whining.

good idea, I will definitely need to look around. It is definitely getting a late NVH style crank bearing cap girdle, cam end-load bolt+timing cover, and remote oil filter and maybe a cooler, among other things.

Which one of your fine pieces of machinery is this going in, Ken?

Not really sure. Probably the toilet XJ because 25" tires, 3.55s, and an ax15 don't make it accelerate retardedly enough for me. And I am pretty happy with how bulletproof my axles seem to be on the MJ at current power+traction levels, and I will probably be improving traction a bit soon since my tires are damn near spanked, so I don't need to make things worse for myself there.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Lolz

If you were cool like Ken you would have spares with you. Or maybe he would use the vacuum from the engine to pump fluid.
