THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Honeywell Smart WiFi Thermostat activated.

Can't wait to regulate my house temperature from the lakebed at KOH next week.*

Moreso it's because my schedule is so jacked that, while I've got a 7-day program in it, it's so I can take it off the 60*ish hold mode whenever I'm about 20 minutes away from the house and it'll be warm when I get there. Kinda like a remote start. :)

Then have it set so go cold again overnight, but automatically be warm again for the half hour I'm getting ready and out of bed in the morning, and then be cold again. Meanwhile keeping the central fan on about 33% duty cycle to help circulate the coal stove heat.

My existing thermostat wasn't programmable and I've wanted to replace it anyway, and I'd forgotten my real estate agent gave me a $50 Home Depot card for christmas, so I figured I'd give this high-tech thing a shot.

* Live in the moment dude! [kicksownass]

Stop being a baby.

We heat the entire house sans one room to 52F.
The bedroom gets the 62F treatment during the day (wife home since works evenings) and 64F when we're sleeping. Keeps the oil bill down.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

All that Honeywell stuff is boss.

The Nest would have been completely the opposite of what I wanted, and they tried to upsell me on the voice-controlled Honeywell.

Listen lady, I want this *because* I am not going to be there with any sort of regularity. Those two would have been useless for me.

Single zone :/

I'll probably make the mid-day setpoint lower once I see how it reacts.

That and Nest is in bed with (read: part of) Google now.
Get the tinfoil oil!

Ah. :(

Don't make it too low the recovery will just burn everything you saved.

Yea nest is cool if you are there, and in a small house/apt with 1-3 zones max. My dad bought nest smokes though, those are cool. Wave your hand in front of it to cancel a false alarm.

Yeah, I don't think the payback time would be worth it for my place given the zone count.
We looked at those smokes but they don't (or didn't at the time) have any 12V versions to work with our alarm system, only line voltage stuff.

You can run a relay off of line voltage smokes to an alarm panel. It's super cheap and easy. I've never done it with a nest but I don't see how it would be much different.

we'll **** you then i won't go

NOOO PLZ I WURZ KIDDINGGG

Also I just ordered 4 Mastercraft AXT's in the 265/70R16 flavor for $156 each with free shipping. They have decent reviews and a more aggressive tread than the AT2's I had been looking at. So close to having all my parts now...

I could have, but then there is also the $35 smoke/co that everyone and they grandmother has had forever or the $129 version...
With new town/state mandates on locations that's $280 vs $1032 in my house!

Also, no heat only detector for non-house/living areas.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I wired/am wiring my place for fully networked smokes and 4 temp zones. 1 each for the bedrooms and another for the rest of the house.

Also set it up so that I have 3-way switch wiring in every room with a box in either the attic or basement for each one in case I want to build my own home automation in the future. Anything that would get a pair of 3-ways normally gets a 3-way, a 4-way, and the same box in the attic as well. Set it up so with two relays in that box I can force any light in the house on, off, or to the switch-determined state. If I got clever I am pretty sure I could use two or maybe 3 relays to give on, off, switch-determined, or opposite-switch state, but I don't need that.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Because there are walls dividing two of them now! The other is rather well connected to the living room but won't be soon.

I need to fix the house up ASAP, tired of living like this (as if I wasn't already) and making some changes in my life.

Adam, I'm not talking prebuilt home automation stuff. If I do it, I'll be rolling it myself, right down to designing my own PCBs. I've already got how I can do it planned out ;)

edit: and I just figured out how I can use two SPDT relays to replace a 3 way switch giving all four options - force-on, force-off, toggle, or normal. Easy.
