THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

If you're just starting prepping now, you're late.

I bought a 7500W generator a few months back and made my 220 extension cord for back feeding last weekend. I kinda hope I don't need it, but at the same time I kinda hope I do.

Side note: 8-3 is a bitch to work with.

Mostly sarcastic, especially since I live in an apartment building. Work is going to be a nightmare the next couple days, snowstorms are not a good time to be working in transportation management.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

We have underground utilities here so I'm not in a huge panic, but I'm probably going to go build an extension cord for the generator today. Previous owner has it backfed into the dryer breaker with its own outlet right next to a basement window.

Figures right after we move in this storm happens

Oooh... so you were going more for the French Toast Alert type of prep :laugh3: My bad.

Colin, that's exactly what I'm doing. Just don't forget to turn the main breaker off. Don't want any fried linemen.

You need to work with wire more if you think 8/3 is bad.

Please tell me you used SEOOW, SOW, SJO or like and not Romex. ;)

Same here, the only overhead wires cross the road so if they come down it should be a decently quick fix considering they'd be a road hazard.

It'll work, but it would be nice to be on it's own breaker so that the generator can't be feed without turning it on making you think about switching off the main (and be less 'hack').
To code there shouldn't be a way that both those breakers can even be on at the same time, but yeah...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I would love for it to be on its own breaker but my panel is full.

It works so I'm good with it for now.

Down the road we're going to upgrade to 200A service and a bigger panel at the same time.

Then think of all the cool things you can do and add!

:eyes: Definitely used Romex.

edit: just looked up the others.

It's coiled up in the crawl space and the end is suspended, not laying on the ground. The end that plugs into the dryer is inside coiled up. It's not going to see use as a welder extension cord getting dragged through oil or whatever in a garage... It'll be fine.

All I'm saying is that Bill is right and you are all making me twitch with this talk of NM-C extension cords, main breaker + backfed/widowmaker type generator hookups, etc. Holy shit! I won't even do crap like that and you guys have seen my house. :gee:

Can I recommend an automatic transfer switch to go with that panel upgrade? They're expensive ($700) but not much compared with what you are going to pay for labor if you don't do the work yourself. http://www.amazon.com/Generac-RTSY2...575&sr=8-1&keywords=200a+auto+transfer+switch

I believe I paid around 200-250 for mine, but it's only a 100 amp and I got lucky and found one new and opened but never used on ebay.

If you don't, at least put in a manual transfer switch (much cheaper) or a service disconnect that isn't the breaker.

Honestly, why is it so bad if you turn off the main breaker? It's the same wire that you'd run a welder or whatever on if it was hard wired across the garage.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I have yet to have someone be able to explain why it's so bad as long as you're smart about how you do it and what you run. I've even thought about getting a grounding rod for the generator. I feel like that would be better/safer/cleaner than a fancy switch.

I think the real issue is romex is designed to be protected in wall and not moved around (solid strand) where as other, proper, generator or welder cables are stranded and designed to be moved around.

As long as you are smart about shutting off the main breaker there is not problem. It only becomes and issue when you sell the house or have your significant other do it when you are away and they may or may not be smart enough to shut the main off. Being that the dryer outlet is usually on, potentially all someone has to do is plug in the generator and they never have to touch the panel and thus causing a large hazard for someone else on the street or your neighbor's house. Label it properly and have it on a different breaker than the dryer so that you have to go into the panel to activate and it isn't as bad.

Hey we all do some things that aren't to code. I ain't busting you that bad (besides the romex :laugh3:)
