THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

This was a PM thing done by the guy that owns it. He seems pretty OCD about the Jeep and was planning on keeping it long term. He states it's never been overheated.

Any reason an older head won't work? My old ZJ is still at Pat's and I'm sure he wouldn't care if I yank the head off that before it hits the JY. $450 seems very reasonable though, especially since I'm sure I'd be looking at $100+ to get the used head hot tanked and checked for cracks, then whatever else I'd need to replace on it (valve seals?) since that motor had 182k on it.
the spark plug coil packs bolt to the head on the 0331 so you have to figure out how to redo the mounting for that and the size of the exhaust ports changed over the years which i have read caused some people problems but i am not 100% on that part

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

The older head will work but you'll end up balls deep in supporting modifications to make it happen.

Coil rail shit, exhaust port shit, etc. Dundy did it on his XJ, he'd know more about it. I'm not sure it works out the same on a WJ (they have a different block casting, unsure about head castings) but it probably does.

As for the 0331... some will say they are fine, it's overblown, etc... if they make it to 75-100k without cracking by themselves AND YOU ARE NICE TO THEM (maintain cooling system, don't ever let it overheat, etc) it will probably last, but if they are abused they tend to crack. And who knows what a used 10 year old jeep has been through at this point.

edit: I learned to braze last night, and it came out pretty decently, so if you wanted there's a decent chance I could modify a spare set of cast 0331-style headers to match an older head. If I hadn't scrapped a set I had last year, I would give it a shot just to see how it came out.

Totally forgot about the coil pack ignition and differences in the headers. I knew the intake was different but forgot about all that other shit. I guess, if anything, it's a decent negotiation point.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Oh. Forgot something.

You mechanical types have any suggestions as to free 2d CAD software? I need to draw a cam profile with constant angular slope/constant rate of rise for the follower rather than constant linear slope (so basically wrap a constant linear slope around a rotational axis, I guess) and it's well beyond my 3rd grade drawing abilities.

I'd love to be able to print it to scale on my laser printer, too, but that's just gravy. I'll fudge the scale manually until it fits if I have to.

is the head already cracked? if not i wouldn't worry about it until you start blowing smoke

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I had zero deathwobble till I took out my badly bent, tweaked d30 with extremely wallowed out balljoints in it. I put in a less bent one with good balljoints and now the damn thing won't stop wobbling anywhere I go.

You mean the one with the quick release ball joints?

i got a bad case of death wobble going. just did ball joints. going to do my track bar heim and bushing after work. hopefully that takes care of it.

I had zero deathwobble with that. Put those new balljoints in it at NACFest last year and had zero deathwobble after. Drove it another few thousand miles (seriously, only a few thousand miles - I really didn't drive much this last year or so) and the same side balljoints were wallowed out really bad. Not loose in the axle housing, just wallowed out shitty balljoints. Still had zero deathwobble somehow.

Threw the new axle in a few months ago in Jay's driveway and it's been nothing but DW since then. No idea why, the new axle is in much better shape.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I've never personally seen bad ball joints cause death wobble. and I've had some shit ball joints.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

My current guess is that it's something about the difference in caster or camber... maybe I should air it out a few times and try to bend the inner Cs in till they match my old axle.

The 0331 are known or cracking. Magnum heads crack around the valves. Clearwater cylinder makes a good replacement monster magnum head with 2.02 1.65 ss valves.
