THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i got all my learnings from this:

http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/PR-OTT/index.html

the conincalness keeps them from loosening up. and the studs are super duper stronger-er.

ive been talking about it for so long now, that if i don't get them, its gonna fail. its science.

Just taking 5 seconds to look at this article.

You can't use regular grade 8 bolts - they will not seat properly on the tapered mounting holes, they have no provision for a tapered interface, and the threads in the steering arm hole are too loose a fit.

You don't have tapered holes

You can't source a stud from somewhere else, you won't find one with 1/2-20NF threads both ends. All the 1/2" studs I found (such as Chevy big block manifold studs) were coarse thread one end. This will not do, since you can neither re-cut the internal threads in the steering knuckle to coarse thread, nor find a 60° taper nut (required to mate to the top of the arm) in coarse thread - they are all fine thread.

Okay cool, use bolts.

You can't take a 1/2-20NF bolt, run a die right down to the head, and then thread it into the back of a tapered lug nut and think you have cleverly made a "lug bolt" (embarrassing picture of just such an aberration at left - bottom middle). When you went to tighten this into the knuckle, the nut that will rotate on the shank, combined with the head that will not will conspire to prevent you from achieving proper fastener stretch and therefore clamping force.

Ya dumb, why would someone do that.

You can't cut your own 1/2-20NF-threaded-each-end studs at home using a vice and parts store die set. The tolerances would never be right, you'd probably end up with threads inside the steering arm hole, and it would just be a flaky way to assemble the most critical joint in your rig. You could probably machine your own with the right tooling, training, and setup time, but by then you're saving nothing.

Ya dumb.

What about the conicalness!? Not arguing they don't work better, just saying they're gay.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I just realized we weren't talking about a set up similar to a 44. This is even gayer than what I thought we were arguing about. Stock 60 had what? Some cast steering arm on top? Ya the conical head seems more necessary. You have a machined surface, ya he said it doesn't matter it's still not as good. Whatever dude, that shit with a washer will clamp down fine and dandy.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

it better be 858495-T28 aluminum. Nothing else will stand up.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

My uncle ordered the roller rockers/pushrods/rock-hold down set.

If all that stuff comes in time for the weekend, I should have the new 440 all set since I have everything else to put on it.

He's also going to port/gasket match my six pack intake to the heads.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Steering arm got 1/2"-20 grade 8s though.
That's what mine are. No conical fanciness on my arms 'cause I didn't want to drop $60 on studs. Plus it cuts off a step when making them.

Not interested until it burns fuel and makes loud noises.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

 Awesome.

This is a smart man. Do you want to wheel NACFest this year?

Of coerse I do haven't you seen my condenced to do list I got 3 simple things to do. I should have the fuel cell pickups and tube in my posetion by next weekend and the belly pan can be whipped up in a hour

That was more aimed at Ross, but ok you too. :D

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Just sold my balljoint 60

Time to start building the kingpin one.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

My stuff for the adapter plates is coming Thursday. Playing with 1.5 square feet of 1-1/4" aluminum is gonna be fun.

Wish I had a bandsaw for this one. :(

I do have an ancient Rockwell portaband at my disposal.

This exists:

I'll hafta take a closer look at mine and see if I could do something like that. It'd actually be pretty useful for a lot of stuff.

Right now it's mounted on a hinged thing to be used like a chop saw, with a chain vise for holding tube. Works perfect for chopping through DOM. This:

Set it and forget it, let the weight of the saw do the work.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I got an import bandsaw for free.

But the piece that aligns the blade is tweaked or something.

Never cuts straight. Always at an angle as the blade comes down.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I was actually very impressed with the small Harbor Freight metal bandsaw. With a 3lb hammer tied to the handle for extra downforce it cut structural 6" C-channel very nicely.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I've been on the hunt for a bandsaw for awhile. Then again, I'm looking for a gaint vertical one, probably gunna be 3ph unless I change out the motor. Non-abrasive cutting is so much nicer.
