THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Wasn't too windy here in eastern MA (at least as far as I could tell, but I did pass out and sleep straight through the night so maybe I missed something), though it got pretty cool out over Sat night though. I really need to get to the JY for door hinges and fix my driver's side door... I'm getting sick of stuffing trash bags in the openings around the door to keep the cold air out.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

it was HOWLING last night. my gf lives like 1/4 mile from the sound and even my vw was being blown across the road driving next to the beach

Yeah same here. It was really unpleasant out there, especially with temps in the 20s...

12 more workdays. I should just quit now :sure:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Wait, Ken, you officially put in your 2 (or so) weeks? Did I miss something?

Find a new job already or just quitting and hoping to find something before you go bankrupt?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

nope... I've been telling my boss for a month now that at the end of this month, I am either working from home 3 days a week like originally agreed upon, or leaving. He never accepts any information that doesn't immediately benefit his world view so I'm sure he has been simply blocking it out every time I say it, so I'm planning on walking on the 29th. If I'm still employed, well, cool.

I am also working on the designs for some stuff I've been wanting to start selling forever, and will be starting my own company. If it doesn't take off in a couple months I'll find a job to pay the bills and go from there.

I have enough money in the bank to survive for about a year if I don't work on the house at all, so I can coast for a few months while trying to run a company without much of a problem.

Yeah, I found a number of jobs I'm interested in last week myself. Some of them I'm more qualified for than others. I'm thinking about sending in my resume and then calling up about the openings and seeing if they are definitely looking for someone with more experience in the specific fields or if training would be an option for someone with less experience.

My only concern is that a few of them are through recruiters. I've always been kinda scared of going through a recruiter. My buddy got a job through one once and the company kept him on for 3 months before letting him go. Apparently the recruiter was paying part of his paycheck while the end employer evaluated his work and they just cycled him out once he hit "full pay" from the company. Not sure how normal that is but it left a bad taste in my mouth

Nice, good luck with that. I'd love to start my own company but I don't have any ideas that jump out at me as something enough people would want. :laugh3:

Right now I have enough set aside to live for over about a year and a half if I cash out all my vacation and personal time (and this is assuming I keep living somewhere with $400 per month rent). I could probably extend that time frame by taking the Mustang off the road and saving the money I spend on insurance for that.

I think this is probably part of the reason why I'm tempted to just quit and start spending 100% of my time on job hunting for something new... then again I really don't want to spend that savings on living expenses since it's currently destined for a house... so I'm going to avoid this option unless shit get's real bad again here.

do it.

thats messed up.

on another note, gonna build a 'hutch' of sorts on the side of my house to store my tools, compressor, jack, etc in since i dont have a garage, and the shed in my backyard is full of yard equip and other junk. a rubbermaid thing is too flimsy and gangboxes are $$$ and my mom would flip if a huge black steel thing was on her house. i already have a solid, well draining concrete foundation where its going, itll basically be a frame made from 2x4s with T111 siding and that opens on one side so i can roll out my toolbox. probably make a sloped roof with shingles for it.. prob just shy of 4ft tall. any of you guys have a good latch suggestion? obviously hinges will be on the inside, but i want to make sure its pretty tamper proof.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

the other thing to consider is that right now, "I am currently employed by <company>" is the most valuable thing on your resume as an engineer. Companies already used the downturn to can all their worst engineers, and aren't hiring except to refill positions they need filled, and the fact that you're still employed says to them that you are a good engineer. I know it's a shitty way of looking at things but it's true.

So if you bail out, expect it to take quite a while to find a new job. I'm planning on that anyways, and I figure "I started a company and here are examples of the products I produced, but demand wasn't high enough to keep me fed and bills paid" is a decent reason for a resume hole. Bonus is that if it doesn't take off enough to keep me alive, it will take a small enough amount of my time that I can continue it evenings after working the pays-the-bills job.

At least, that's how it is in my head. I'm sure reality is quite different.

Yup. I realize that (another reason why I'm sticking around where I'm at now).

Your plan seems pretty solid and I'd think that having a reasonable attempt at starting your own company would look alright.

Wherever I end up getting a job I really hope that they will let me take a month or so off between accepting the job offer and starting work. Give me a bit of a vacation between jobs and time to find somewhere to live.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Anyone want a J10 steering box? I would rebuild it and put it back in but I have a new racecar steering box in there now and a J20 box I can rebuild to put in it later. If no one wants it I'll just whoop it in the garbage. It has 4 mounting holes which gets all you xj queers all bonered up I hear.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Also I'm giving my dad the isuzu back and he's just going to sell it and sell me the XJ for the price of the isuzu, so straight trade up. If anyone wants an isuzu that just needs spark plugs let me know.

Trash it is then, or rob might want it. I think it's basically as strong a j20/durango box but from what I hear takes LESS effort than a j20 box to turn. So much so that a lot of people like the J20 box since it's less old Cadillac feeling. It turned my 2000 pound 35s like they were feathers even when it pissed fluid.
