it looks like cam, lifters, timing chain, and gaskets from what im seeing.

Why would you have to replace the cam/timing chain?

New cam = new lifters

New lifters does not necessarily mean you need a new cam.

From what I've been taught anyway.

Timing chain is completely irrelevant, unless you're just doing it as maintenance.

its for my buddy, he decided to just drop new lifters in and call it a day to save coin.. providing when he pulls them out that theyre the problem.

Pretty sure you have to do new pushrods with new lifters as well.

Provided nothing else is worn out.

Scott what makes u think your motor is junk? You are aware that high milage 4.0's make a good bit of valvetrain noise

It never seemed to make this much noise before I put it away in storage for 1.5 years. Took it out and soon after got this chattering sound I have been trying to figure out ever since then. Took out the carpet and (for obvious reasons) the noise is a lot more noticeable. It just doesn't sound right.

Yeah my engine is coming up on 175k miles (actually more than that since most of the last 40k miles on the odometer were done with 33" tires and stock gears) and it might be normal for it to make some noise but something about this doesn't seem "normal". None of the other Jeeps I have been in made sounds like this and everyone who hears it thinks it sounds like shit so I figure somethings going bad.

make sure it isn't an exhaust manifold leak before you go nuts on it.

I'll check that out but I'm HIGHLY against that. Yes it happens more at higher RPMs but I don't think the exhaust leak would go away whenever I put the engine under load at cruising speed.

And this sucks.. kinda.. not really I guess. So far I've barely finished a quarter of my buffalo chicken salad that I got for dinner and I'm stuffed. Assuming I finish this entire salad I'll barely break 1000 calories for the day. I'm not used to this whole "not eating much" thing. I feel like I should be stuffing a large pizza in my face right now, or at least I feel like I should still be a little hungry.

pretty XXXXing sweet. NASA deserves more money. I'd love to work for them but I'm pretty sure they like smart people. :dunce: I might have qualified as such at one point but by now I feel pretty dumb after not using my brain for the past 3 years.

Whoo i think i found a new garage to work on my junk! The one i'm renting now is way bigger than i need at 1,600sq ft which i don't want to pay for that much. So a 900 sq foot, heated (insulated roof and everything) one popped up about 3 miles from my house with 220v service, and a huge work bench with storage will be mine soon! Not having to keep two non-functional jeeps helps a lot in the ability to downsize a bit.

Why? If they're straight and not worn out at either end then they're fine. Just put them back where they came from.
