Speaking of which. There's a set of WJ knuckles ready to be removed if someone wants 'em for cheap. :laugh:

Only problem is the guy who stripped the axle took a cutoff wheel to the tie rod nuts, so the surface the nut tightens down onto is kinda gouged up. But it could be smoothed or FIRI, whatever.

so on that note, have any of you used gas powered air compressors? I don't have 220V available and could use a stronger compressor. There are a bunch of gas compressors that should handle my tools fine for anywhere from $250(used) to $600 (new) on CL.

I'm considering picking one up for those times that I need more power and/or portability. Am I dumb for thinking about doing this?

I managed to get that axle back together last night using an open carrier from a bent WJ axle and spider gears from a shitty XJ axle. Also had to use the CV shafts out of the bent axle because they're different lengths depending on whether it has the Vari-Lok or not.

Turns out the WJ axle is shimmed outside the bearings rather than behind the bearings like a high-pinion XJ one. So with the limited shims I had available the best I could get was like 18 thousandths backlash...oh well. :anon:

They're putting the axle back in the jeep today, can't wait to hear what it's gonna sound like.

...and apparently it sounds like the hounds of Hell are trying to escape from the diff. :laugh:

Used carrier bearings and wrong shims FTW.

Yeah it's got oil...I told him to use 85-140. :laugh:

I've got a shit-ton of the right diameter shims here at work so I just built myself an assortment to take home. Might as well do new carrier bearings if I'm gonna take it apart again.

I went there when the yanks kept beating the Sox inthe playofffs, epic riots, at one point they had the mounted police hiding in the dining commons, I worked at umass transit and after that riot they bought a caged bus off immigration to be ready to arrest at the next one

How does a town come up with the valuation of a car for excise tax? My 93 Jeep is valuated at $1600 while my '05 Mustang is only $2450.

I mean, I'm not complaining since the taxes are fairly low... just curious how the hell the difference between the two is so small. :dunno:
