I also don't just blindly plug a destination into my GPS and expect to get there.
Until recently I never even had GPS capability. Part of what I love about road trippin' is sitting down with a map beforehand and planning out a route, figuring out a few alternates, and familiarizing myself with wherever I'm going. Relying on a GPS, to most people anyway, means you miss the whole trip.
That's why even though I did my first cross country trip 10 years ago, I still remember how to get everywhere we went...because we had a road atlas and a notebook.
Guarantee that even though I have a fancy smartphone now I'll still be pullin outta here at 4:30 with printed maps and handwritten notes.

when sam and i went, we just went 'west' and went places we thought were cool. only used the gps to save ourselves when we were hopelessly lost and dangerously close to mexico in the middle of the night

I would be screwed with out a GPS. I'm not one of those people who have to have one just to go from home to work. But if I don't really know where I'm going or its a new area, I need it.

I enjoy having it mainly so I know approximately what time I'll be home and how far away I am at a moments notice. Even to RC which is just 128 - Pike - 84 - 81.
I have a good sense of direction, but a terrible memory of what route I came from. If someones navigating for me, I almost always need directions to the place and back.

That's one of the things I dislike most about my Droid. The shitty flip phone I had before was easy as hell to text n' drive with because I didn't have to look at the damn thing. The keyboard on my Droid is great but requires two hands.
At least I don't have the stick shift to further distract me this time. :laugh:
Funny note; I was talking to exmarried chick yesterday about this trip because she's into hiking and traveling etc. Asked her if she'd ever been to Mt. Washington. Response? Yeah...she climbed it with her ex-husband, and he proposed to her on the summit.

I'm going to tell you this at the risk of you actually doing it and then making me look like a copycat when I do it on my next rig.
The centering ball from a 1310 CV has a 1/2" ID needle bearing inside of it. If you pry the ball out of the CV assembly it fits perfectly onto a 1/2" piece of solid stock or tube, and gives you a nice stainless round knob that looks really clean. Do that and put a few small tack welds (or epoxy inside the needle bearing) to hold it in place.
Yep...some of the best moments (and biggest disappointments) on our trip were from being distracted by cool things.
See also: waking up in a tent in the middle of a field, somewhere near Big Sur, surrounded by migrant workers picking crops and singing songs, when you thought you were actually camped near the ocean.
GPS mighta been a little helpful in that case.

Hmm...I just might do that. I used 3/4" rod but I could just weld a 1/2" bolt to the ball and weld the head of the bolt to the rod. Only issue I can see with that is I have big hands and I remember that ball being fairly small.

When I was your age, GPS was something that showed your latitude & longitude, and could maybe get you out of the woods if you were lost, or at least enable you to radio someone your location so they could find you. That's as long as it was able to latch onto at least 3 satellites with a clear signal and it took FOREVER to accomplish that, slightly shorter if it already knew your approximate location and could calculate where the satellites 'should' be.
'Navigation' required a computer and a separate GPS unit that connected to an RS-232 serial port (what's USB?), usually had finicky driver issues, and required an unobstructed sky view to find your location.
The problem with all this newfangled technology is you young whippersnappers grow up so dependent on it that y'all can't find your own way out of a paper bag. :twak:

Ido have 2 of the "old GPS" units that I used hunting and scouting(Ask Anthony about the one in my glove box). But now with phones they're useless. I can find where my dad and uncle are at any given time, text or call them (providing we have service), and my dad's iPhone actually has a pretty damn accurate compass on it. I can read topo maps but road maps get me discombobulated.
And I like to know how far I have until I need to worry about cutting someone off to get to my off ramp.
I still look up where I'm going on a map so I know what side of the road I'm looking for and landmarks. I have never once had a GPS be right about where a house was. When I went to Anthony's house it said his house was a quarter mile further on the right side of the road. Not even close...
And I suck at math. Like ungodly terrible.

Because I do that math in far less time than it takes me to reach for my phone and bring up the GPS shit.
I HATE having a GPS that sits on the dash and runs constantly. Makes the trip go by so much slower because there's a constant countdown and you can't just lose yourself in the journey and enjoy the whole traveling bit, it's always just about the DESTINATION. I don't need some crapass little screen telling me that my next turn is in 250 miles and showing the same XXXXing straight line road the whole time.
Don't even get me started on having the damn screen rotate so whatever direction you're heading is always 'up'. If I'm headed south I want to be heading down. West is left, east is right. Having the XXXXing screen rotate to compensate totally XXXXs with my own sense of direction.
Is it any wonder that I've said my favorite historical experience ever would be to participate in the Lewis & Clark expedition, creating maps instead of following them?

I think it depends on whether you're traveling just to travel or whether you're going on a vacation to an actual place to spend your time.
I've never traveled JUST to travel. I always have a destination. Especially if it's the same trip I'm going on (aka PA 2-3 times a year). I don't care about the traveling part because I've done the same route so many times.
