THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I need to go to a staff meeting at 1... :(

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Cool.

Oh, I like that too.

It's still cheating because you're letting the car do all the rev matching :looney:

For wheeling, the reverse-manual valve body is the shit. I'll never understand why anybody prefers the standard pattern, but some people swear by it. Picture this:

standard: P-R-N-4-3-2-1
reverse: P-R-N-1-2-3-4

Usually done with this kind of shifter (this is a standard pattern):

Now picture two common scenarios when wheeling. One, you gotta go forward and back a few times in a row to line up for something...you're going to have to navigate the entire shifter maze everytime you want to change direction.

Two, you're doing a steep climb and you gotta nail reverse real quick to keep from going over backwards. On a reverse pattern you just slam the shifter right up from 1 to R (a lot of people modify the shift gate to remove the neutral detent), with a stick you can at least hit the clutch...standard pattern you gotta go all the way back up through the maze to hit reverse.

But as far as performance goes...I'd really be happy with a RMVB in a wheeling rig. Talk about rev-matching...especially if you get a RMVB that allows for engine braking in the lower gears, that XXXXer will put you through the windshield and lock up the rear tires instantly if you knock it down a gear at the wrong time.

In my TTB YJ project I'd totally rock one if there was a reliable badass transmission that bolted up to that motor. I love stick shifts and always will, but that rig is being entirely purpose-built for the best off-road racing performance - which is not, and never will be, a stick shift. The only criteria that trumps that in this case is reliability.

Mine does this. Mainly because I don't care to learn more about it, I don't know what style the AW4's are but if I'm driving up my driveway around 10mph in 1-2 and let off the gas it brakes hard! I'm not sure it's supposed to but I don't give a shit because it still works. :gee:

I know what you're talking about - but downshifting a MVB at any kind of RPM is an even harsher deceleration.

The AW4 is all electronically controlled solenoids - even with the various aftermarket shifters out there, all they do is give you manual control over what solenoids are engaged. So it's still kind of a 'soft' transmission.

With a manual valve body, you're physically in charge of the fluid passages in the transmission. So as fast as you can shift, the transmission is instantly in another gear. If you do this at any kind of speed, the line pressures are gonna be super-high and the engagement of the next set of bands/clutches is extremely hard.

That's all any of the 'shift kit' upgrade do - they keep the line pressure higher between shifts, which makes them faster & more firm.

You've clearly never been in 4LO and 3 and then dropped it to 1-2.

You can very quickly smash your face on the steering wheel.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

That's because you couldn't fathom it.

You were still in your world where the skyjacker mid-arm kit was the best thing since sliced bread.

It still is an awesome suspension design, no unloading or anything poopy, except the ghey truss I ditched

Hmm, neat. It never shifts like an automatic, only when you move the shifter?

I don't know what you mean by reverse manual.

Old school autos are a whole other animal then newer trannies.

My fathers challenger will give you whiplash in the 1-2 shift if you're not prepared for it.

It's XXXXing awesome.

 the new tranny in the nova doe that now. Until I start breaking other things and the tranny slips since the kickdown cable isn't hooked up and the tranny doesn't know my throttle position.

That makes sense.

All I know is my father said while cruising in 2 in his car DO NOT downshift to 1st.

Bad things would happen.

Yep, I did that while driving a friend's buggy, and was very glad I had the 5-points on.

In that sense the MVB is not good for idiots. At least the synchros in a stick shift will do a little bit to prevent you from making an improper downshift. With a MVB the transmission WILL go into whatever gear you select, regardless of vehicle or engine speed. If you screw up it's nothing but your own damn fault. :D
