THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I still don't understand how it's possible to wear out headphones, so you must still be extremely abusive.
They were 3 years old and the tiny wire sheaths broke.

Stop trolling

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I do. You don't have to respond to it right away, but it's nice to be able to get the important things when you want it. Or be able to look something up at a moment's notice or .... I could go on and on.

I think it's possible to have both technology and handshakes. Too many people just bury their noses in their phones and hide behind their monitors. (ie: Ross pm-ing instead of calling)

Somehow I've made it over 28 years without needing the ability to be connected 24/7...I see no reason to start now. Obviously I know the technology is out there and I see it used on a daily basis, I know what it's capable of. And if I had a demand or desire for that kind of connectivity in my life I'd have one too. It's extremely rare that I'll buy something just because it's there.

I don't own a GPS and frankly, I've thought about buying a nice big road atlas to keep in my truck. Just about any trips I take are planned beforehand; I'll either write down directions or find/print the relevant maps. I love having to pay attention to what's going on around me in order to figure out where I am...just an awareness thing I guess. I've never gotten myself "lost" anywhere, because I always know how I got to where I am. The last thing I'd like on a road trip is to space out for most of it just waiting for the next voice cue, then have something go wrong and realize I have no idea how I got to be somewhere. And for the most part I apply that philosophy to a lot of things in my life.

Not to say I've never used a GPS, or fallen back on VZ Navigator. I'll use text messaging often because it's not always practical or convenient to make a phone call. I use Google SMS a few times a day. I can check my email when I want to. And these are all things that my obsolete, but reliable non-smartphone has no problem with.

Yeah, I'm different. ;)

I like having a smartphone. I don't use it to it's fullest capabilities, but I use most of it.

I mainly use it for e-mail (I like getting tracking numbers for things I've purchased immediately, and having all my invoices immediately so I can dispute anything).

Internet - NAXJA obviously. That and I can check PMs when I'm trying to buy something as soon as they come in through private party sales.

I used to use it for the camera until it started sucking.

Occasional game or two on it.

Oh and calling/texting people :D

That's about it. It has a bunch of random other stuff it can do but I don't have the time/need for it. Like it auto-sync'd my facebook/contacts so I have a thousand numbers in my phone to people I haven't talked to in like 5 years. Kind of creepy.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Your wallet is more important than your anal virginity?
According to the DoD I am certain it is, in light of recent events.
I need a phone I can have in my pocket and push against something with my thigh, or drop in a oil catch pan, or off a 14' ladder onto a concrete floor, etc, etc, etc and not have to worry about it. A smart phone screen wouldn't last a week with me.
Yeah... a blackberry 7100 fits those requirements to the letter, but the software on em sucks butthole.

I am literally counting the hours today, weather is beautiful and of course I am in the office.

What's so important that I'd want to read it right away? If something is that important or a dire need call me. I am not anti-phone. Although a couple guys I play cards with are and they are happier without them. If I could do away with the $75/month fee (wife & I) I'd ditch it in a heartbeat. I've actually seriously given it some thought over the last 2 months, but the women won't give it up and wants to be able to reach me anytime.

I have never seen the need for "at a moment's notice" web access. I won't be getting a phone capable of anything like that until it becomes my only option. It is hard getting a phone these days that works as a phone without all the extra junk. Plus I'm month to month now and I don't want any other 'contracts'.

I don't. Exactly my point.

I'm the same. I do use a GPS (borrow the wife's) when I head into the bigger cities (like Boston or Providence) or down to PA. Other than that, I've got road maps from rest stops that do the trick for anything else I need.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I got a silicone thing of sorts and a pack of 3 screen protectors. The silicone thing is nice. It's not the super soft one that stretches. It's glossy and translucent.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

smartphones and technology FTW

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

 I accidentally threw my phone the other day into a door. Otter box did an awesome job protecting my D2.
That's sort of like saying 'He walked into my knife 7 times.'

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

That is not a good idea.

I completely understand not wanting all the "extra junk". To each their own.

But going without a cell phone isn't a good idea. Public telephones are few and far between nowadays especially since you don't live near a city. What happens if your truck breaks down or something? Pretty convenient to be able to call AAA in the middle of a storm or something and not have to leave the truck, especially if you're several miles away from anything.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

My current phone was already obsolete when I got it replaced with the same thing for free a few years ago after crushing the screen in a motorcycle accident.

I don't want a smartphone. I'm happy with something that takes pictures.

Me too. I have the first generation gzone from verizon. It looks like hell and doesn't take good pictures, but it is waterproof. I threw it at a tv one time and it cracked by the hinge, but it's glued back together now and works mint. I've never had a smart phone so I don't know what I'm missing.

:roflmao:

I've dropped my EVO SEVERAL times already including onto pavement, desks, bouncing off car batterys into filing cabinets, etc. Still works 100%.

NEVER had a problem with it and all I have is like a $1 screen protector on it, aka no case at all. I had an otter box but it was so bulky and annoying to get in/out of my pocket.

The lens/speakers are effed up from getting metal shavings in them.

Oh and another one for you Bill, I don't undestand why you would have your phone on you while working on stuff, especially since you "don't need to respond right away". I always leave my phone somewhere nearby my work area so I can hear it but can't damage it.

I started doing this too. My iPod lives on my Lista bench connected to my Klipsch speakers when I'm in the garage. My phone also stays on that workbench which is my "clean" area. (no welding/cutting/etc on that side)

Those were her points, but $75 for a phone bill is stupid. I've come to realize, reluctantly I might add, I'll have a cell phone for awhile. It isn't mostly by choice either. I couldn't ever imagine paying for it if we both had smartphones. That bill would be double.

Add in a land line, TV, and internet and your at $200 a month. That's sad. :( The new house will have a land line phone and internet, I doubt we'll have a TV in the house. As it is we don't watch much on our 26" CRT now anyway. But that's a whole 'nother topic.

Same here. Well, the 2nd revision of it anyway.

Never comes out of my pocket unless I remember to take it out. Otherwise I end up leaving it upstairs and not having it all day (which is actually what happened all weekend it never left my nightstand other than in the evening). Anyone important has my house number anyway.

I'm not getting a case for a phone either. I like my phone as it is, small. Why would I want that is 12.5 sq inches and 1/2" thick in my pocket before adding another 1/2" because of a case? (yeah, I see the possible jokes here)

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I love being able to look info up from anywhere. I was working on my jeep on the side of the road after getting tboned and needed some info. I also used it to get ahold of a friend to have him bring me parts, he wasn't answering his phone because he was working but I was able to use my phone to get on irc and get his attention via his computer screen.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Bill, I think my smartphone is thinner than your Boulder, but yours has less frontal area.

What Ken said is a lot of how I feel. It's just super useful.

And like I said, it has better hardware than my old laptop. I don't really see myself using that much more at all now.

$75 seems high for two phones with just calling/texting, especially if neither of you use it that much.

BS out of the past few times I've called you this past week at night you've been watching TV with Angel. :D

You could always opt out of having a landline. A lot of people are doing that nowadays. Not saying I would.

Just remember to take it out of your pocket, it's not hard. Do you keep your keys/wallet in your pocket when you're working on stuff too?

I agree with your last point. Main reason I got rid of the otter box case. And like I said before my phone has survived perfectly fine.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Now don't get me wrong, I know those smartphones have their advantages, just not enough to make me want one.
