Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

This was on the Z forum, I had to share

A woman from Los Angeles, CA, who was a tree hugger, a Democrat, and an anti- hunter, purchased a piece of timberland, near Colville, WA.

There was a large tree on one of the highest points in the tract. She wanted a good view of the natural splendor of her land so she started to climb the big tree. As she neared the top she encountered a spotted owl that attacked her. In her haste to escape, the woman slid down the tree to the ground and got splinters in her crotch.

In considerable pain, she hurried to Mt. Carmel ER to see a doctor. She told him she was an environmentalist, a democrat, and an anti-hunter and how she came to get all the splinters. The doctor listened to her story with great patience and then told her to wait in the examining room and he would see if he could help her.

She sat and waited three hours before the doctor reappeared. The angry woman demanded, "What took you so long?" He smiled and then told her, Well, I had to get permits from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management before I could remove old-growth timber from a recreational area. I'm sorry but they turned me down.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

oh i see. im glad its you that has to run all those wires. and if im not mistaken arent the x-overs supposed to be as close to the speakers as possible for the best sound quality?
Yeah, lots of zipties.

You're correct about putting passive crossovers near the speakers, but those filter the amplified signal. The signal going through these is only at 4V and is pre-amplification. They don't make adjustable passive crossovers...
yes, technically you lose quality over length of wire. but no one can hear that. there was a test of two audiophiles who couldnt tell the difference between coat hangars and super expensive monster speaker wire.

i place a limit on car audio bc theres no way you can get sound to act the way you want inside a car, its a huge headache. my kenwood excelon deck, 4 polk 6.5s and 460W RMS infinity amp pushing a 10" dvc polk sub sounds just as good, if not better than the super nice system i had in my subie with a rockford amp for the mb quart speakers (6x9s in the rear deck, 6x9 components up front) and a 8" rockford sub which i blew and replaced with a old school pioneer 10.

my home stereo system on the other hand.... i need to have my 1970s harmon/kardon fixed, shit rocks. it's 4 channel stereo pushing a pair of 1970s ESS model 10 loudspeakers and a pair of second gen (circa early 90s) bose 201s to fill in the mids.
See above, what I said about crossovers ;)

The problem with long wires is 2 fold. Resistance increases with length, but low voltage wires get noisy when placed next to high voltage wires. That's why it's important to get good shielded RCA cables and run them on the other side of the car than the power cable. The only cable that makes a difference is the RCA. As long as the others are their rated gauge (some companies sell 1/0 but it's really 1 ga) and are copper, the wire will sound just fine.

You've got a really good point about car audio being a huge headache to tune when it comes to getting the soundstage right. A $10k car audio system will be half as good as a $3k home theater. There's just too many reflections and things in the way and limits to speaker placement.
Wood mounted vices suck, duh!!
Not if the wood is sturdy enough.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

so now its offical, none of us wheel.

i want to, just don't ever have days off to do so. crossing my fingers for the rausch run the 30th though! it'll be another one of those "i know i can go about 2 hours before the meeting time and hope i dont get stopped on the way, with year old MA inspection and PA plates"

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

My XJ is ready to wheel. :D

Well, almost. It could. Still need to do the driver side motor mount bushing and replace the front passenger side bumpstop, but that's really it.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

tis true that all d44 knuckles are interchangeable? there's a cheap set for sale on pirate but the dude doesnt know wha they came from

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

If you dont' need highsteer, i have a set of Fords in my basement taking up room...

If Pepboy's "buy 3 get one free" tire sale includes 35x12.5R15 Goodyear MT/R's, then I might just have to purchase some...

Lets hope for my sake they don't. Their website didn't list anything but a generic tire in that size, but I can see on their display a goodyear logo.
