Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

up and down the river is something other than a drinking game?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Jenn's family plays up and down the river sometimes. I play 4 person, 9-card pitch every day at lunch. It gets viscious. Jenn's pretty good at up and down the river but I always overbid when there are a lot of cards in play and underbid when there are fewer. We play hearts at lunch when there's an odd # of people too.

The rules we play 9 card pitch with are:
The points you play for are High, Low, Jack, and Game and you play to 15. You have to bid to win. 4 players, each player is initially dealt 9 cards. Then there's a round of bidding with a minimum bid of 2, but if you have better cards you can also bid 3, 4, or smudge. (Smudge is a very ballsy move that often results in failure). Winning bidder calls the suit. All players discard all non-trump and are dealt however many cards they are missing less than 6. Often times there are between 1 and 5 cards that have not been dealt to anyone and are not in play. When play begins, all players have 6 cards and of those 6 cards you try to get high (pretty much always A), low (pretty much always 2), Jack (it's almost always in play), and game (A: 4 pts, K - 3, Q- 2, J - 1, 10 -10).

:roflmao:

Instead of rebuilding my floor like Chris, I'm going to build a "false floor" like Anthony around my tranmission filled with speakers with enormous magnets.
DO IT!

I'd be more competitive if we played it as a drinking game, at least it would level the playing field somewhat :dunce:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

apparently a little known secret: I suck at hacking in the sense most people use. I have never broken into a website or computer system.

I can look at a circuit board and 45 minutes later tell you the basics of what it was built for, what it does, and how it does it, but I straight up suck at web hacking.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

used to play with my co-workers. Also "up and down the river." Both too complex for me. For some reason card games melt my brain even though I can do calculus and electrical engineering shit with no problems, I was well known as the most retarded card player ever when I played.

I have a lot of family in Michigan, where it's a lot more widely known. I dunno if there's any truth in this, but there's a strategy called "hoyle's law" where if no one calls trump the first time around, you always call the opposite suit of the same color. Even if you have a horrible hand in that suit.

The only justification for it that I could come up with is that there's a good chance that the opposing team doesn't have a jack (high trump card) in that color, which is still a pretty weak strategy. Either way, I worked at a summer camp out there where we played every night, and me and this other nerdy kid Todd decided to investigate further.

I had my laptop with Visual Studio 6.0 installed and we ended up writing a C++ program to simulate Euchre games. It would randomly deal all the cards and select the appropriate trump, and then we assigned a point value to each card. Based on that point value we set a threshold on whether it was likely to win the hand or not, and then we tallied the amount of wins based on Hoyle's law. It ended up just over 66% played over 1000 random hands.

So we decided to play that way exclusively the whole week, keep track of the statistics, and of course not tell anyone what we were doing. The stats ended up real close to that 66% mark and we called (and won) on some incredibly awful hands. People thought we were playing retardedly and badly until we ended up in the top 5 team standings out of 20.

Just an interesting experiment, and while fun in itself, it's definitely more entertaining to actually try and play the game.

Blackjack is my vice, though. And I've got a very favorable record at most casinos in AC. I'm due for another trip soon... :D
