oh and J10 :twak::twak::twak::twak::twak:

if you need to borrow some money to make both happen I can lend you some, interest free, can be paid off in pizzas when I am drunk but not too drunk to remember the payment.

Either of those 4.0s still good/running? I know you said one had like 0 oil pressure or something.

one runs. its ben sittin in the back of my xj with no valvecover, has 235k miles and a bottom end tick and no oil pressure when hot

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

yeah you've got a point... another problem is that I have no real physical evidence to point to a specific year, a friend had to look it up in a military-only database via registration number to find this out for me. My VIN is "3396" so I doubt that'll prove a damn thing, since the military is wacky about that stuff and their "VIN" for vehicles this old is just the serial number off the dash plate. All in all I expect it to be a collossal pain in the ass either time or money wise.

EDIT: now that I think about it, the VIN being non-17 digit may prove that at least it was built before the 80s, adding credence to my claim, but won't prove it was '58 specifically.

For some reason I thought vehicles before 1980 have a lot less restrictions when it comes to titling. I'm sure you have, but check on MA RMV as I recently read something about that...might be a loop hole.

Otherwise, you could find a RMV Inspection Station done by the MA State Police..where they inspect theft recoveries/totals/etc and see if you can get them to certify the year, then bring something in paper down to the registry. Sounds harder than it probably is, but knowing MA, you really never know.

Here's the question I always forget to ask you...how the hell are you going to insure it? I find it crazy hard to believe that doesn't require commercial plates...but, who knows.

If that works I will be your friend forever. I will have to see if I know any state police officers who can come and look at it because apparently mass doesn't honor other state's temp plates, so I think driving it up to one of their inspection stations would probably not go well for me.

As for insuring, well, that's a good question. It has air-assisted brakes which fall in the same category as vacuum-assisted brakes. It weighs under 26001 pounds. Presently I'm worried that it will require commercial plates due to the GVWR being 39k and change, even though in my use it will never be over about 24k. I am hoping that with antique plates it will be a non issue, from what I know, I'm simply not allowed to haul anything for payment with antique plates, club functions / sundays / driving for maintenance purposes only, etc. Antique plated vehicles are very inexpensive to insure due to the restrictions on driving them. I am presently hoping to get it retitled as a '58 (since it was originally built in '58 and if anyone other than the military had rebuilt it in '90 it would have remained titled as a '58, since all they did was paint it and toss in a new engine) and then get it antique plated. Failing that, even dropping the GVWR down below 26k somehow would not get me out of commercial plates because of the 3 axles, so if I can't get it changed to the true year of manufacture, I am going to end up commercial... and probably need a CDL due to the GVWR but not the brakes. We'll see.

I can also attempt to get my brother to register it in NH, since things are a lot easier up there, but that's a bit shady/questionable and I will only do it as a last resort.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Ken I would call on the temp plate thing. I've bought a couple vehicles from NH and I remember my mother buying a car from NH and all were driven home on temp plates in Ma.

I just looked into registering the buggy in AZ., we own a condo out there, and the title fee is $4 and registration was like $7. Tax on it was some weird declining value scale and emissions inspection is only in the Phoenix & Tucson area but our place is on the Cali line in Lake Havasu, so no test. They actual emissions test from 67' up.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Just because you buy the car and get it home safely doesn't make it legal. My father told me about the temp plate law thing...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

So far no one has even questioned it, and it's not liable to be driven (except saturday, I've decided I'm gonna just drive it to lobster's place on 5 cylinders) till my temp plate is up after that anyways, so it's *mostly* a non issue. I need to figure this out by the end of the month.

http://www.mass.gov/rmv/titles/11salinsp.htm although this is for salvage, I believe they can do inspection paperwork for title corrections as well since they know more about vehicles than a desk clerk. You have to stop by those and make an appointment, so if you get a chance stop by one and ask what they think.

For the insurance, I know someone with a F-350 that is registered as commercial plates but he uses some loop hole that insures it as regular private insurance...I could inquire if you'd like.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

haha bob is already on it.

If I had gotten my ass in gear and got those ramps started earlier I would go for it! I need to haul my 3500# winch out of storage and build a mount for it so I can hang it on the front end of the bed and pull jeeps into the back.

EDIT: thanks a ton Jeff - was looking at that page earlier, I'll have to call them up and see what they think of this. I've heard of it being possible to private insure and commercial register a vehicle if it's really for private use but has to be commercially registered due to GWVR/axle count, but don't know how to do it.
