THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

So I am in the labs here at work (quiet loud in here and its in the center of quite a large building) and I'm pretty sure I just heard thunder. Or people are moving big heavy objects and running into alot of walls with them

Hopefully the weather is clear tomorrow so I can go to the Halifax car show.

edit: oh yeah, just went from 'pretty dark' to 'zomg dark' out. And that is more definitely thunder. I gotta leave soon, cant miss a good thunder storm :D

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

eff the rain on a carshow day

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yeah, it looks like it's raining hard enough that I almost want to stay at work and wait it out rather than getting soaked walking to my car...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

foxboro is next week southeastern regional is this week they alternate!!!!

:nono:

august is switched since there are conflicting pats preseason games on the regular dates.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

absolutely no idea :dunno:
F12 during bootup sounds like an OEM specific thing, never done that.
I forgot to mention I'm using Windows XP. It basically goes to load windows then goes to a black screen offering to load in safe mode & start with other options, but none of them will start windows...so before it would go to load it was when I hit the F12 command to bring up the diagnostics & system settings.

It is suddenly looks like a HURRICANE outside. Too bad I don't yet have my truck back yet...it would feel like:

I just had some guy from craigslist who asked about splitting up the SX's and beadlocks try to tell me that the beadlocks were worth more than the tires, and he wasn't going above $400 for the tires. I told him to stop smoking crack.

gotta love craigslist lowballers.

Anyone who finds me an M35/M54 camo or olive drab soft top for less than 200 dollars gets a case of beer or suitably priced alternative (hard liquor also available)

EDIT: why are all the janitors here about 300lbs, clumsy, and reeking of cheap perfume?

Bill/Ross/Anthony/Mark/Colin/people smarter than me when it comes to fab - what materials would you make a 12 foot long ramp intended to support half a cherokee out of? I'm thinking 2x2 0.250 wall square tube on each side of the tire tread area, with 1" x 1/8" angle iron crossbars every few inches for the tread to ride on and a 2" x 0.250" angle iron lower bar below the two square tubes with 1" x 1/8" angle or plate triangular trussing between the 2" angle and the 2" square tubes. This isn't gonna be cheap to build but I think it should be strong enough.

So Keith, I see you looking at the thread....did ya go to the DWE meeting last night? Anyone else? Bill or Rob perhaps?

you could do it a lot simpler than that - 6 or 8" wide 1/4 wall steel u-channel. buy a 24 ft length, cut it in half. voila, 12' ramps. it's just a ramp, not like it's getting launched into space where every ounce counts. back to making welding carts...

should i be ghetto and weld the casters to the cart? :gee: i don't have any hardware on hand and i can't see myself ever replacing them...

That'll support a 4000 pound jeep? I'd be surprised, honestly... I would want to truss it at least a bit. And my tires are wider than 8" and probably not gonna grab very well on smooth steel, so I figured I should do something for traction :dunno:

Maybe I am severely over-engineering this.

EDIT: yeah screw it, weld em on. Just keep the welds reasonable instead of all the way around so you won't curse yourself if you have to grind them off.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

how about something like a ramp frame, 12' x 1', made outta 2x2x.250. cut some 1x1x.125 square to go across the inside on the frame every little bit to tie it all together. then, have a layer of some wire mesh stuff across the top for the tire to drive on.

that's what I was thinking, except with angle iron instead of square crossbars. You don't think it'll need trussing below to support that much weight? If it won't, screw it, I'll do it tomorrow, but I really don't want to drive halfway up the damn ramp only to have it fold in half.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

just build the whole ramp frame outta 2x2x.250 then. do crossbars every like 8" or something. thick wire mesh stuff over it, done

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

That doesn't seem like it would strengthen things vertically very much... my gut tells me that vertical separation will make things stronger with less material than simply beefing the hell out of it with no vertical separation will. Wish I knew enough to prove it in a meaningful way.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I think you are trying to over engineer this Ken, and going with that convention and trying to make it the beefiest thing possible.

To determine stress in an element due to bending, you use the equation:

sigma (plain stress) = (M * C)/(I)

Where M is the moment, denoted by force times distance from pivot, C is the distance from the center line to outer wall of beam (would be the radius of dealing with circular cross section), and I is the area moment of inertia.

Since the moment of inertia of a multi beam system like you were talking about is pretty damn hard to calculate by hand, I can't do any bending calcs, but I will tell you this.

You know those posts that hold street signs up? I was able to use one of those as an RTI ramp one time. One end of the post was rested on an object, the other on the ground, I drove my drivers front tire up, and the post didnt' bend at all. I got out and scratched my head, I was sure it was going to bend.

I very well think you could do your design without the 2nd row. The yield strength of most of that metal is pretty high.

Hmmm. I probably am way overengineering it, I usually do (since I'd rather do that than under-engineer.) Hell my rear shock crossmember is made out of 2x2x3/16"... mostly because they had a drop piece in a convenient size.

Round street sign post or the flat C-channel type? There are plenty of unnecessary street signs in worcester... :eyes:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

If anybody needs ANYTHING off a 91-95 XJ send me a PM as Im picking one up this weekend to end my motor issues. I'll sell pretty much everything real cheap because once I'm done its getting scraped ASAP.

Mark I do have those fog lights. Send me a offer PM.
