You know, part of me is seriously consdering pulling the trigger and giving that IRO longarm kit a try.

I know I will get plenty of shit for saying that. And yes I know/understand why a lot of people are opposed to it and/or hate radius arm setups.

It's not the radius arm that turns me off.
It's the single 10mm bolt and the dumb adjuster.

I was considering getting it w/o the adjuster. Or get it w/ the adjuster and see how it holds up. But that 1x 10mm bolt problem would still be there...

I wanted to test it and beat the piss out of my Jeep. If for no other reason than to prove to myself whether or not it would hold up as well as people say it does. I still think that if I bought it for $600, ran it and it sucked (or broke... though I heard their warranty and service is pretty good on other products, so they would probably replace it if it broke), then I could probably sell it for $400-$500 and cut my losses.

And the 'no upgrade from D30' part is the one thing that is keeping me from buying it I think... except I started thinking that I will be running the D30 for at least a year so it may be worth it. Then i can use the X-member that comes with the IRO kit as a start for a 3-link whenever I go to a better axle.


And I actually thought "why the hell did I post that" after I clicked submit and went off to kick off some tests. :laugh3: I planned on deleting it when I got back if no one had replied yet.

While this might be a problem for us, 75% of those wheeling an XJ will keep the D30.
Anyone who upgrades (usually) is smart enough to see the issues with the IRO stuff.

Yup. Heck, in high school I thought I "beat on mine" too. Now I realise it was nothing more than if I would be doing if I took that unmaintained side road on my work in the morning.

Take a look at some shear rating charts. It'll scare you.

Yeah I know. What it really comes down to is I want the cheapest LA kit I can find since I will probably end up working on a 3 link next summer so it would only be a temporary thing

The weak link that I would be concerned with is that single bolt and I know that it's not the greatest design. I have been looking at the clayton and TNT kits for a couple months now and debating between them but then I realized I may be losing the D30 sooner or later anyway and thought I might as well not spend $1000 on a kit that i could pick up a temporary fix for $600.

As I sit here at work I know I shouldn't sacrifice strength even for the reduced cost.... but I feel like I would just be burning $$ if I bought a kit and then went to sell it in a year or so if I do a 3-link. Anyway, I shouldn't have started this again. Moving on.

I think that might be Rob's grandfather in the picture...

Scott - that one 10mm bolt is all that's keeping the axle from swiveling, trashing your driveshaft, yoke, slashing the tires on the fenders, wrecking the springs, and making for a very long trail repair or recovery process. Not a chance I like taking. Also, what happens if you hit the brakes really hard on the highway when some idiot cuts you off, and that bolt breaks? The top of the axle spins down around the front, the axle rolls under the vehicle, and you either roll or are severely inconvenienced.

both the tnt and clayton kits you can use when you upgrade the axle, if you have 600 to waste on the iro kit you can just give it to me and save yourself the headache

I wasn't sure if that was an option though the upper "arms" aren't hard mounted to the lower so I suppose I could have guessed that would be possible. Thanks.
