THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

spicers.

Looks like I may get to keep my fingernail after all... didn't expect that, since I ended up with a 1/4" black mark / blood blister under it after losing grip of a ratchet at the JY a few weeks ago and putting all my strength into smashing it into the edge of a WJ fender.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i knew i wasnt gunna be the only one to realize that.
The red seals and the cross in the old 297 style give it away.
Dont listen to everyone else, theyre awesome joints!!!
Yeah, thats the right wording.
correction, I did not use crappy u-joints, they were on there when i bought it:moon:
I sure hope you didn't pay much for it then!
so now that im going to replacing all u-joints on my jeep, which ones should i go with?
Spicer life series.

i knew they were brute forces jsut cause of the way it broke. tell tail brute force will always shear two trunions off opposite each other in one shot.

ps Bill- i jsut did a little quick searching and found that it looks like BF's are made by Neapco which are made in the USA

Interesting, still doesn't make them any better than using two pieces of a tree branch for a u-joint.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

colin: how low in RPM does it go? ross tries to drill metal like it's wood with his. if it can't go 200 rpm or less, don't bother.

X2, low rpm or bust. I had to put a 1 7/8" hole saw through the end of a piece of 2" poop pipe last night at something like 600rpm, it mostly consisted of going REALLY SLOW till it jammed, then backing it off and letting the motor spin free for a few seconds to cool it off again and repeating.

This...

it goes slow enough to put a 1" drill bit thru 3/4" plate AND all of my bits are in brand new shape with zero blems or chips or blueing from overheating. .!.:D.!.

I've used it before as well and really liked it. And it's reasonably priced.

Just so you know, trying to find a whole new fuel pump assembly for an MJ is like hunting for a white whale. I suggest a fuel cell.

Well I was talking about the tank in the XJ, but I might consider a fuel cell in the MJ. That's too far away right now. In reality, I'll probably just end up running new lines to the stock tank and wheeling it like that for a while, who knows.

Sheetmetal you just need a lot less heat, it's not too too bad. I usually dial in my settings with pieces of scrap of the same metal I'll be welding so I can avoid blowing holes in the sheetmetal for the first half inch.

It's not the welding sheetmetal to sheetmetal, it's the welding thick metal (.125" or thicker) to sheetmetal that concerns me. I'll practice some this coming weekend if I have time.

had my first broken axle shaft this weekend... am i a big boy now? :D

I could probably break those joints in a vice. They suck.

Spicer 760s or I refuse to wheel with you :D

Jeff at Crown has them for like $30 a pop. While you're at it, grind out the shafts for full circle snap rings and forget about them until the ears actually rip off. You should be fine on 33s for a while like this.

Yeah, I did some of that last night. Had to fix the push bar of a lawn mower for a friend of mine, it was ~1/32" wall tubing pressed flat at the ends and I needed to weld 1/8" plate across a break. What I ended up doing was just aiming the wire more at the plate than the tube, i.e. wire at a fairly acute angle to the work (since the plate was being added to the flattened tube.) Might not be the right way but it seems to have worked.

i found it interesting too. yes they dont hold up to wheeling and the abuse we put them to, but id take a spicer/brute force/other brands in that order. ive had better luck with BF then napa's or other parts places off name.

some tack tack tacking is more acceptable when welding the 1/4" rocker to the stock sheetmetal.

Spicer and Precision are the only u-joints I buy.

Everything else is crap.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Hmmm, with all this discussion I have been reminded that I gotta drop some coin on new joints soon. Damn, there goes another $200-$300

if you listen to these guys you'll start blowing ring gears. run the crappy joints and be happy with your easy to fix weak link.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Anyone with some free time, I'm looking for a trailer. I have a few weeks to get a good one.

Ideally I'm looking for a 16'-18', full wood decked, 10K GVW (7K, ok, but prefer 10K), tandem axle with dual electric brakes, slide in ramps, etc.

jesus, are they made of unobtainium or gold?

It did, for about a day. Hasn't hurt at all since then. When it first happened I combined a lot of words in ways that I'm pretty sure didn't even make sense.
