Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Mark's RHT tap is chipped at the end, and Mark's LHT tap has a taper to it, which he found out once he went to thread his TRE in.

They aren't the best for tapping, but E-taps has LHT 7/8-18 for $50.

Alright, thanks for the info. I will be calling the local shop tomorrow to see what they can do for me... if they can't help then I will either man up and buy the taps or just go with the weld in ends. The 1.25" OD sounded so nice though cause it would help with clearance issues which I am sure I will have.

So now my options are 1.5"x.250 wall with a threaded insert, 1.375"x.250 wall threaded directly, or still do the 1.25 and just drill/thread it and deal with having a thinner wall at the threads (which still should be plenty strong in my opinion, esp compared to stock steering)

Anthony, just to be sure since I don't trust my own judgement when it comes to making judgments regarding $$ I don't want to straight up throw away... can you confirm that I can tap a .875" ID tube to take the .875" thread of the TRE? And do it without it being sloppy? From what you said before it should be a negligible "slop" factor... just want to be sure before I A) sound like a dumbass when I call the machine shop tomorrow or B) order the wrong stuff and end up $100 in the hole :gee:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Just a heads up, but I have the taps because I have weld in inserts.

You'll need to chase the threads after welding.

Damnit, I was afraid of that. Though I was thinking of picking up a bolt or 2 in a 7/8" 18tpi flavor and threading them in while welding... hoping that would keep the threads straight. Maybe even post heating a bit while I removed the bolt.

No. 7/8" is the OD of the threads. You need a smaller hole to be able to tap a 7/8-18 thread.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

a grade 8 or higher bolt with a slot ground in it works decently well too

yup (but i beat ya :wave1:)

...neither.

let's take a nice normal size that everyone can picture: 1/2-13.

the threads are 1/2" nominal dia and have 13 tp. rule of thumb for the tapped dia is nominal - 1/pitch. you will always find that the tap drill size is a bit smaller than the nominal size. the tap drill for 1/2-13 is 27/64 which is .423". the nominal - 1/pitch forumla yields .421. the difference is half the thickness of a can of coke, so you're good to go.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Have fun finding a 7/8-18 bolt that isn't special order.

7/8-18 is mainly a GM specific thread.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I should find a junker to enter in the figure 8 at the fair this fall. I have always wanted to and now I actually have some spare $$ that maybe I could do something like that. Hmmmm....

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

And ok, thanks for the confirmation. I think I must have read something backwards last time.

If the local shop can drill/tap the 1.25x.250 wall DOM 1020 (or 1026) for a decent price I think I might just take that route. I think .1875 (or whatever I said it would end up being) is enough at the threads. Worst comes to worst I will sleeve the first 6" of the rod to add strength to that part. .1875 is better than stock so it will be an upgrade either way.

Awesome. When I was 16 I went to the demolition derby (the mother drove me and stayed for the show). There was an oldschool towncar that won... and the body looked quite beat up but structurally it all looked straight and even the body wasn't bad for some of the hits it took.

As soon as we were walking out I said "lemme guess, that car that won..." and my mother finished it with "seems like it would be a great first car for you". I have wanted to enter one of those in a derby ever since. And quite frankly I wish that is what I had for my first car. That would have been badass.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

so ill need a new steering box for the 95, ill also need to tap one for hydro assist, now should i buy a reman from one of the parts stors or should i buy one from PSC with the taps for hydro assist?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

yayyyyy going home

half the issues with those tests were the lab team not being able to read, another quarter were them reading properly and then second guessing my instructions and blaming me for the tests failing. One test had a problem that was my fault... out of six that failed.

The best part? all 6 plus the 6 they claimed passed had a bug that would have made them break if they had followed the instructions.

:banghead:

By the rules the car was too heavy, but tech inspection consisted of the guy asking me if it was a 4cyl and if the gas tank was drilled so it could only hold 4 gallons. when all the cars were lined up before the race, the other drivers were walking by and commenting on how my car was going to be hard to knock out of the race. People were hitting me, and not having any affect, but when I hit them back, they went for a ride

Or you can take free wagoneer box(better than a gay YJ box) $30 to rebuild it and tap it yourself and be ahead of the game.
