THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

poly performance carries them

they have no slits/cuts in em' and you need a special tool to slide them over the shock eye.

i have heard good things about them

I was wondering how those got on shocks. They didn't look like they had slits.

leaf springs are springs with leafs

Proposterous

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Being Jeepless sucks. Well, not being able to drive jeep sucks. I guess I could move it around the driveway. Cant touch it till insurance looks at it. Ill just use the time for virtual wrenching. Time for longarms!

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

thats too bad, what was wrong with it? did you take pics or whatever?
Had no camera on hand sadly, but something seems wrong with it. Described what seems to be wrong below...

Darn, that stinks. What are your questions?
Most of them are stupid... hopefully either you or Travis can figure out from my crappy description what's wrong with it, if anything:
So I popped the cover and it definitely has a detroit truetrac in it, but the gear setup seems... wrong. I have no real experience on that though. First thing I noticed was that the pinion bearing feels really loose, I could definitely shake the pinion yoke side to side slightly. Second thing I noticed is that there seemed to be excessive backlash, with no real better way to explain it, I could turn the pinion yoke enough that the U-joint bolts were moving about 1/8". Third thing I noticed is that what appeared to be shims were on the *outside* of the bearing caps, i.e. housing-shims-bearings/caps-carrier-bearings/caps-shims-housing. I might be misidentifying something though. It also appeared that the shims were kinda screwed up and not in all the way. I may have been misidentifying something else as the shims though.

To top it all off, the story of the jeep the axle came out of is rather farfetched. The original owner had the stuff all set up, but then went to jail for driving on a suspended license or something, and had two of his idiot friends sell the thing, they supposedly never drove it much except to move it around the yard. The guy I was dealing with bought it off of them for cheap, realized most of the thing was a complete junkbucket and he'd be better off cannibalizing it for the lift/other stuff and starting fresh, did so, and decided to sell the axles. Along I came and realized the axles seemed FUBAR.

I'm not entirely sure I am interpreting the backlash and shim positioning right, but it just "seemed wrong". I'm going to compare it to how the pinion on the OEM-setup, almost unused, almost completely rust free d30 I have sitting in my friend's garage feels tomorrow when I head over there to do some prep work on the 8.8.

My suspicion (again, with a very limited amount of experience on gears...) is that the original owner of the jeep had the thing regeared, then landed in jail before he could do much of anything with it, so the gears never got completely trashed by the crappy setup job. I think if either someone can tell me how to measure to make sure it's set up right, or something, I might get it.

I searched my address book for "NAXJA" and called a random person (Colin was the lucky winner!) and asked some clueless questions while I was looking at it but I didn't really describe much in any useful way, and I couldn't send a picture, so he couldn't really figure much out :dunno:

so remember my windshield escapade?

they reinstalled it a few days ago

and i get out this morning AND ITS CRACKED DOWN THE FAWKING MIDDLE
That sucks, think they'll redo it again? I recall them giving you a lot of shit about it the first time around

EDIT: oh yeah. Got a mechanics crawler, a torque wrench, and an 8 ton hydraulic wire crimper for christmas... gonna be useful this week! :D

ken that def sounds like a super ghetto setup, best advise i can give ya is to wheel open open this year, dont jump in head first with lockers theres alot to be learned before you get locked

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

goal for tomorow, push green jeep out of garage and clean up garage, the push green jeep back into garage, cant wait till the pos is running again

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

oh yeah - as far as lockers are concerned, my original plan was to go open/open as I don't have the cash for lockers atm, but I figured if I could pick up a d30 with 4.10s already in it *and* a locker I'd be ahead of the game. Since it seems like this d30 was set up by some idiot, I'm probably back to the original plan.
