In that case, I think I'd like a 5spd in my rig. Just to be able to say that my tranny is built to handle putting it in reverse while moving forward. If I even think about putting my VW in reverse moving any faster than .0000005 mph it grinds like a mother.

Turbo 400 is an automatic.

I love the NV4500 in my CTD, but I'm obviously not going to wheel it. Definitely fun/better on the street.

For wheeling, I like the AW4 or any automatic for now. I don't have to worry about anything except trying to put the gas pedal through the floor.

as for drivability, im torn between the mj's aw4 and drab xj's ax15.
its nice NOT to shift and drive witha coffee in my hand,
but its pretty sweet being able to shift and compression brake with the ax15.

the if you can't find em grind em thing makes perfect sense....until you drive scott's jeep, give up on finding em, and TRY grinding em as a last ditch effort, and still have a helluva time getting it to do that!


I used to drive a 1985 chevy boom wrecker at the shop i worked at. it had the 465 and as long as you didnt use the granny gear on the street it drove fine. it was no sports car but it really wasent that big of a deal

I dunno, I like the aw4 plenty... I have abused the shit out of mine (towed for 600 miles on fluid with 130k on it, with overdrive whenever I wanted to, plus the fact that it had 130k miles on the fluid in the first place! should have changed it when I bought the jeep at 107) and it still hasn't given up. In fact I did a 50% fluid change on it while I did the tranny lines last week and it's stronger than ever. Every single Chrysler tranny my family ever had kicked us square in the balls even when treated far better than that... the A604 in the minivans and whatever turd is in the ram 2500 van have crapped out over and over.

on the other hand, "put it in reverse if your brakes die" is pretty hardcore.

Missed the part about the TH400. I just read manual and hit the reply button. My Dad swapped one into his v8 s-10 way back.

I want a 3 speed manual tranny personally. Behind a built cummins 4bt or maybe a 426 Hemi. This will be in my Willys pickup/ratrod OR it's a pretty good combo for anything else on wheels. I don't know what kind of 3 speed i'd want exactly but I do know I want it to shift like crap.

I'm not so sure you'd have enough room to run the front cap in an XJ.

I can't remember , but I feel like you might hit the front crossmember...?

Maybe there is enough, I don't know without looking.
